Officer’s Choice Anandalok Salaam Bengal held on December 14th at Vidya Mandir Kolkata was an event meant to salute the unsung heroes of Bengal. “Overwhelming!” This single expression is enough to aptly describe the entire thought process behind Salaam Bengal and the evening of December 14th.
This year it was the 4th edition of Salaam Bengal and it could be easily seen that the enthusiasm of the organizers and everyone associated with this noble effort has increased manifold and that is truly owed to the appreciation that this initiative has received from all corners of the society. On this platform, unsung heroes from the fields of education, sports, health services and bravery are identified from all over Bengal and duly honored and appreciated.
The process starts with extensive advertisements with the help of which the people of Bengal are requested to send in names of such people who have been working for the society without any expectations. After receipt of the nominations a panel of judges goes through the details to pick four such names whose contributions have in many ways benefitted the society at large. Jury members for 2013 were Vocalist Ms. Lopamudra Mitra, Ace designer Ms. Agnimitra Paul, Dr. Subrata Moitra and Grand Master Dibyendu Barua. All the judges were absolutely delighted that they had got an opportunity to be a part of this noble initiative and at the same time said that picking one amongst so many outstanding people was a real tough job for all of them.
Arijit Mitra : Outstanding contribution in the field of education. Mr. Mitra has been tirelessly working since 2010 to facilitate the education of underprivileged young girls from rural areas. His organization awards a scholarship known as IPA scholarship as a part of which the organization takes the responsibility of a girl’s education for a complete span of one acedemic year. Apart from this Mr. Mitra’s organization also distributes books and other essentials that may enable girls to study and become self dependent.
Dr. Kallol Ghosh : Outstanding contribution in the field of medical andrehabilitation services. Dr. Ghosh has homes called Aapon Ghar and Ananda Ghar where he provides shelter to street children. Anando Ghor in Gobindopur is an exclusive shelter for street children affected with HIV Aids. About 85 children, some affected with cerebral palsy, some devoid of any identity and some affected with Aids, enjoy a peaceful and happy childhood in Dr.Ghosh’s shelter homes.
Mr. Amiyo Ghosh : Outstanding contribution in the field of sports. Mr. Ghosh from Behala has been coaching young underprivileged boys in football for the past 40 years.
Mr. Tarun Mukhopadhyay: He considers helping people and saving lives his biggest duty and responsibility as a human being. With the help of a rope made of fiber optics and telephone cables uprooted from the walls, Tarun had saved 56 lives from the fierce fire attack of Stephen court. He had also saved 13 lives from the grabs of the deadly fire of AMRI in Dhakuria.
The felicitation ceremony was indeed overwhelming and to add to the wonderful feeling, the audience was treated with beautiful songs by Subhomita. Songs from Subhomita’s album Brishti Paye Paye were absolutely refreshing and changed the ambience of the entire evening. A live performance by another youth icon of today’s Kolkata, Anupam, was also another high point of the evening.
Sholoana Bangaliana salutes these four spirited men and the entire team of Salaam Bengal for their heroic efforts.
