The team of Sholoana Bangaliana met director Aniket Chatterjee on April 10th to talk at length about his upcoming movie Mahapurush O Kapurush . Here is what we discussed:
When asked, why he chose the title Mahapurush O Kaparush over his supposedly lucky alliteration which had given him the previous three hits namely Bye Bye Bangkok, Chaa A Chhuti and Goraye Gondogol he said that he does not believe in lucky names and alliterations as it’s not the name that leads a movie to success but the script and the overall presentation. He also does not have any fixations about selecting titles that have the “No.1” adage to them or start with a particular alphabet.
As the title Mahapurush O Kapurush closely resembles Satyajit Ray’s “Kapurush O Mahapurush”, Mr. Chatterjee has tried to rope in the flavors of this wonderful Satyajit Ray movie while keeping his own movie’s identity and content entirely different and unique.
The director also says that while he has indeed kept the content and style of his movie absolutely new and fresh, the subtle need of tickling the Ray nostalgia of the Bengali audience has not been overlooked.
The story of Mahapurush from Ray’s movie Kapurush O Mahapurush has been Mr. Chatterjee’s all time favorite and through this project of his, he has tried to portray the current scenario of the issue that had been dealt with in the Mahapurush part of Ray’s movie. The movie thus centers on the fact that we as God fearing people are still fooled by some so called Holy Men who are so well disguised that we fail to identify their real motives.
The cast of the movie includes some of the most appreciated actors of the Bengali Film industry. Bratya Basu, The Honorable Minister for Education (Govt of WB) is the lead in this movie and the movie also features other prominent stars like Dipankar De, Ritwick Chakraborty, Rimjim, Sujoy, Locket, Konineeca, Partha Sarathi Deb, Jay Badlani, Lama Halder and such others. The casting as we can see is absolutely in alignment with Aniket Chatterjee’s preference of making movies with many of people’s favorite faces. There is however one unique feature about the movie, and that is, this time the focus will entirely be upon the lead actor which is something we have not seen the director experimenting with in his previous movies.
Talking about the music of the film, Aniket da says that this time he would like to see the movie songs making a mark of their own unlike his previous movies where the songs had not done well enough outside of the realm of the movie.
From the conversation we could gather that the Bengali cine goers can look forward to another super hit social satire that has an interesting plot and sumptuous doses of humor and surprises in it.
