Team Sholoana Bangaliana spoke to leading percussionist Bickram Gosh about his contribution to the Kolkata Anthem and his new albums and films.
The Kolkata Anthem which has been compiled by Purbayan Chaterjee is the city’s own song meant to celebrate the glory and joy of the city and to strengthen the bond that we Kolkatans share with each other. While the music of the album has been arranged by Purbayan himself, city’s most celebrated Table player, music director and one of the coolest celebrities of Tollywood, Bickram Ghosh has written the English lyrics of the song.
Bickram says that he always had a flair for writing and when Purbayan approached him with this idea, he just could not say no. Bickram also said that his writing comes out best only in English as Hindi and Bengali are not really his forte.
Talking about his upcoming projects, Mr. Gosh revealed that he will be releasing a special Pujo album this Durga Puja which is known as “Prem” and melodiously deals with the subtle emotions and that “Prem” that is so inherent to us Kolkatans or may be the Bangali at large. We could not help but ask Mr. Ghosh if the songs of his album are in alignment with the songs that we mostly get to hear in Pujo mandaps these days to which Mr. Ghosh said that his album Prem is absolutely not that but is more in alignment with the Pujo releases of his growing up years, the melodious 70s and 80s. His album Prem is all about melody and beautiful lyrics, something which is very evocative and “Here to Stay” not just for one Pujo but for many Pujos to come. Prem, in which some of the most popular and revered musicians and singers of the city like Ujjaini, Rupankar, Pt. Ajoy Chakroborty will be heard and is being released by Girona Music is a tribute to the City of Joy and a “connect point” for the Global Bangalis says Bickram Ghosh.
Bickram Ghosh in partnership with Sonu Nigam has also composed music for three Bollywood Hindi Films of which two, namely Super Se Upar and Jal are complete and work is soon to start on the third film.
Unfortunately the audience of Bengal may be a bit deprived of Ghosh’s extraordinary creations as most of his time these days is taken up by the Hindi Film Industry. The multi talented percussionist is however composing the music for Arindam Sil’s next Kolkata Tollywood movie.
Apart from the films and his Durga Puja 2013 album many other compilations are in the pipeline which will be released soon. There is a Tabla Solo album, an album called Percussion On Jams, Drum Rasa which will have the 9 Rasas evoked through drumming and an album with an interesting name Tabla Un Tabla.
Speaking to Mr. Ghosh has always been an enriching experience as even when he speaks about music that burning passion for the art that he has seems to grow upon the listener. We look forward to more innovative music from Mr. Ghosh.
