Princeton Club Kolkata was again host to the unveiling ceremony of another New Kolkata Bangla Movie Gyandas Pheriwala on August 4th. This new Bengali movie is based on a short story “Kantai Kantai” authored by Sri Sanjib Chattopadhyay.
Gyandas Feriwala, which will be directed by Debajyoti Batabyal and produced by 18 + Productions, has its roots based in the Indian Philosophy of Gyan, Dharma and Karma Yoga as even the short story on which the film is being made is inspired by the amrita vani of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa.
The narrative of the film traces the life and struggles of a young village boy who goes on to become a famous writer under the pseudonym of Gyandas while still holding on to his initial profession “Boi Er Pheriwala” non de plume that he inherits from his Guru.
The movie will act as a platform owed to which the audience of Bengal will again get to see the power packed performances of the industry veterans like Soumitro Chatterjee, Dipankar De, Mamata Shankar, Sabyasachi Chakroborty, Kharaj Mukherjee and such others.
In the lead is Samadarshi Dutta playing the role of Gyandas while Sabyasachi will be playing the role of his Guru and Mamata Shankar that of his mother. While speaking to the team of Sholoana Bangaliana, Samadarshi summed up his experience of being a part of this project by just saying, “ This is the second best script that I have read after Abohoman”…. And we know whose brainchild the 2009 Bengali Movie Abohoman was…
Though Sabyasachi was not too expressive about the role he is playing, Mamata Shankar seemed to be quite vocal about her excitement and hopes from the movie. Mamata Shankar is playing a negative role in this movie which again is a new challenge for her and she seems to be thrilled with the idea.
Music director Rajkumar Sengupta, whose revolutionary audio visual music album Last Counter released by INRECO is already creating a buzz in Kolkata’s music circle has taken charge of the music of Gyandas Pheriwala. And in keeping with Rajkumar’s style and fetish for something different as well as the very rustic and native feel of the movie, the music has been kept strictly within the periphery of Bengal. The audience can thus hope to hear some bit of Baul, Bhatiyali and yes our very own Rabindra Sangeet in the movie. Adding to the melody will be singers like Raghab Chatterjee, Monomoy, Anupam Roy, Soumitra of Bhumi, Arko Mukherjee and Kharaj Mukherjee and adding to the Romanticism will be the lyrics penned by Srijato.
The young and ambitious producer Abhirup Ganguly is also quite excited and at the same time nervous and hopeful about this movie as this is his first project. “18+ Productions has been launched with an aim to produce meaningful cinema that also resonates with the contemporary culture of Bengal, something that both, the multiplex as well as single screen audience will appreciate and want to watch”, says the young producer.
Unfortunately the writer of Kantai Kantai Sri Sanjib Chattopadhyay could not attend the event due to health constraints but conveyed his message to the media by way of an audio visual that he has immense faith in the director and is very hopeful that the audience will like the movie that is based on his short story (with some minor modifications).
The movie was initially called Kantai Kantai based on the original work but since such a title gives very much the impression of a masala entertainer, the title was changed to Gyandas Pheriwala which is not just in line with the plot of the movie but will also play its part in stirring up the required curiosity.
The Kolkata leg of the shooting starts on August 17th and is expected to end by September 17th following which the crew will move to Kalimpong for the rest of the shoot.
