The story of “Proloy” revolves around brave heart Barun Biswas, portrayed by Parambrata Chatterjee, who raises his voice against numerous gang rapes in a village called Dukhiya. Gang rapes in Dukhiya was celebrated almost like a festival by some political criminals, led by Prashanto (Rudranil Ghosh), who was supported by local Political leader (Supriyo Dutta). The gang does not even spare minor girls and aged females. Police also will not take up any complaints against these powerful criminals. Barun Biswas with his team forms a forum named ‘Jagaran Mancha’ and stands against all odds and forces the law to arrest the culprits. Eventually, the accused men get Barun Biswas murdered leaving the entire village in shock and pain. Later, Binod Bihari Dutta, portrayed by Paran Bondhopadhyay (a teacher of Physics as was showcased previously in Raj Chakraborty’s Television serial for Sananda Television, titled “Proloy Aschhey”) reaches Dukhiya and restarts the movement that was initiated by Barun Biswas. After coming to Dukhiya in search of the truth behind Barun’s murder, Binod comes to know about the goons (who were by then released on bail), and the way they have terrorized the village. Binod tries to motivate villagers the way Barun did. The film also stars Saswata Chattopdhayay as an eccentric and arrogant IPS officer.
While conceiving the film, Raj Chakraborty originally thought of casting his ‘ Kanamachhi ‘ actor Abir Chattopadhyay as Barun Biswas and continue with his television duo of Paran Bandopadhyay and Abir Chattopadhyay but due to his prior commitments, Abir could not take up ‘Proloy’. Raj then zeroed down on Parambrata Chatterjee as he felt that Proloy needed a lead actor, who will be accepted both by the class and the mass audiences. The cast list of Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Paran Bandopadhyay, Mimi Chakraborty, Rudranil Ghosh, Saswata Chattopadhyay definitely leaves us with a lot of positive expectations & impressions regarding the outcome of the movie. After ‘Refugee’ (2008), Rudranil Ghosh yet again has played an ‘evil’ character in Proloy and I am quite sure that a versatile actor like Rudra will deliver an outstanding performance as ‘Prashanto’ the leader of the gang of rapists.
The director has also played upon the popular choice of the masses for the movie as he has kept the hero beating up the villain philosophy on the fore. The director also feels that Paran Bandopadhyay has given his best in the movie and it would not be an exaggeration to call him the ‘Big B’ of Tollywood.
The movie, from the looks of it should be an instant hit at the box office as it is just about everything that both, the masses and classes of today love to watch.
