Teatro! 2013 was a one-of-a-kind competitive theatre festival, which gave an ideal platform to students of schools and colleges and also to the street children, coming from the renowned NGO ‘The Hope Foundation’, which collaborated with the event reaffirming its faith and belief in the cause. Teatro! 2013 was aimed towards the promotion of social equality and solidarity in the field of performing arts. India Stage was the ‘ticketing partner’ for the event and ‘Connections’ managed the Public Relations of Teatro! 2013.
Five teams were shortlisted to showcase their respective performances on Sunday evening at Gyan Manch. The shortlisted teams were: (a) Hope Foundation (the team, which consisted of street children), (b) National Gems High School, (c) Sanskrit College, (d) Kali Katha and (e) Shriek of Silence. The eminent judges’ panel included theatre iconic personalities like Biplab Dasgupta and Sudipa Basu along with talented young musician Bodhisattwa Ghosh, who represented the generation next within the judges panel. Renowned author and cultural activist Mr. Shamik Bandopadhyay graced the occasion as the guest of honor.
All the five shortlisted theatre teams performed their respective plays fantastically. As per rules of the contest, the teams were confined to maintain the durations of the plays strictly within 15 to 20 minutes to the maximum. Eventually ‘Shriek of Silence’ was the team, which won the awards for staging the ‘Best Production’ (their production was titled as ‘Fair Play’) and also for the ‘Best Actor’. Thereafter, Mr. Shamik Bandopadhyay formally handed over the ‘Winning Prize’, which contained a token amount of Rs.5000/- along with a small memento and a certificate of appreciation, to the President of ‘Shriek of Silence’ Mr. Suprabho Tagore and his team. However the award for the ‘Best Director’ was given to the director of ‘The Hope Foundation’ team because the director Ms. Sushmita had to work really very hard in order to coordinate her team, which consisted of a bunch of talented street children.
The star attraction of Teatro 2013 was a special live stage performance by one of the most adored elocutionists of Kolkata Mr. Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee. Sujoy began his evening performance with ‘Uttaridhikar’, by the late Sunil Gangopadhyay. The audience was charmed by the mesmerizing vocal skills and emotive craftsmanship of Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee. The next 50 minutes after Sujoy took charge of the stage, the audience remained captive under the magic spell, which prevailed allover the auditorium of Gyan Manch. Many people from the audience were seen wiping off their tears, while listening to Sujoy’s intense elocution. The narration of a chosen piece from Smt. Rita Ganguly’s Biographical Memoirs about her Guru Maa ‘Begum Akhtar’ titled ‘Ammi’ was one that was both soul and thought stirring. As very few people from the audience were unaware of Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee’s talent as a writer, when he recited one of his own recent poetic narratives about a same-sex love story, the audiences could not resist their tears while listening to Sujoy’s own literal work.
During this phase of the program, few familiar faces were discovered amongst the audiences like famous Bollywood actor Ashish Vidyarthi, Tollywood Hero Saheb Bhattacharya and renowned Bengali singer Miss Jojo. After the show, Ashish emotionally hugged Sujoy at the back-stage and complimented him on his beautiful emotive skills and opined that his elocution is no less than high quality theatre acting. Sujoy really has provided a new-age dimension to the art of elocution and from Sholoana Bangaliana, we hereby wish Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee all the very best for all his future creative endeavors and hope that he will continue to support more events like Teatro! – Stage your own story 2013.
