Popular Bollywood Singer Nakash Aziz, the voice behind numerous foot tapping numbers like Pungi (Agent Vinod), Dhating Nach (Phata Poster Nikla Hero), Gandi Baat (R…Rajkumar) was in Kolkata for performing at the East Bengal Club function. Nakash Aziz shares his ideas on music, upcoming work and his maiden Kolkata visit in an exclusive interview with Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent Priyanka Dutta.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Hey hi! This is your maiden visit to the city of Joy. How is the experience?
Nakash Aziz– I am actually saddened at the fact that I will have to leave the city so soon. I wanted to explore the city. There are so many places that I would love to visit. However I saw the tram today. I have always been fascinated by the fact how a train can run on the road. This is the coolest thing that I have ever encountered. I have gone to the Stadium twice and I could only see the Birla Mandir from outside as it was closed. Now that I know that the city is such a lovely place, I will make sure I explore the city the next time I come here.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – For how many days have you been in the city?
Nakash Aziz– I am in Kolkata for the last three days. But right after checking into our hotels Pritam Da and I had started rehearsing for the event. Pritam Da wanted to ensure that we perform to the best of our abilities in front of the crowd and hence we started rehearsing from the moment we landed in Kolkata.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – Did you get to taste Bengali food?
Nakash Aziz– Well yes, I did gorge on Rosogollas. And I also tasted biriyani from the Shiraz Hotel. They were just awesome.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – On the work front, what are you doing now?
Nakash Aziz– At the moment I have my hands full with live events. I am touring with Sajid-Wajid and Pritam da. I also have a couple of independent shows lined up. I have worked as a music composer for a Marathi film which will be releasing in January. I also have assisted Rahman sir in a Tamil film which features Dhanush. Apart from that I have also sung a few songs for a few Bengali films too. For example the “Honey Bunny” song featuring Sohom and Mimi has been sung by me.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – Is language (Bengali, Marathi or Tamil) a barrier for you?
Nakash Aziz– Language is never a problem so long as it concerns music. I can sing in any language, given the chance.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – You have assisted AR Rahman in many films. How was the experience?
Nakash Aziz– Like I always say, working with him is like visiting a Durgah. It is simply a divine experience. He is a very clean soul and too honest with his work. Rahman sir believes that he never composes but it is God who helps him with the composing. The vibe that he gives is unimaginably positive. It is very hard to express the experience actually.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – How different is the work experience with Pritam?
Nakash Aziz– Apart from the fact that Rahman Sir and Pritam da are good composers they are also great human beings. They give you a lot of space. They will bring the best out of you. Later you will be astonished that you did such a marvelous job.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – You did not receive formal training until your high school days. Whom did you train under?
Nakash Aziz– It was my dad initially who first taught me whatever he knew of music. He used to ask me to watch the various music shows and understand the soul of music. Later I trained under many Gurus like Ustad Maqbool Hussain once I became serious about music. Since I am a little impatient by nature there were breaks in my learning of classical music. However I learnt for eight years under different Gurus. Anu Kapoor and Shaan are the other people whom I need to thank for giving me valuable advices on improving my music.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – Do you have any role models in music?
Nakash Aziz- Rahman sir, Pritam da and Sonu Nigam are my role models in the field of music.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – Given the chance which composer will you like to work with as a singer?
Nakash Aziz– I would have loved to work with Pancham da. There is great energy in his music which I really enjoy. I wish I could at least meet him.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – Which actor would you like to lend your voice to?
Nakash Aziz– I would like to lend my voice to Aamir Khan.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – You participated in the popular reality show Indian Idol 2 but got eliminated in the initial rounds. How much has that affected you life?
Nakash Aziz– Well I trained for six hours once I got selected. I knew the potential of the show and I also knew of the changes it will bring to my life. I have seen what the show has done to Abhijeet Sawant. But I got eliminated on my dad’s birthday. The mood at my home was like that of someone dying. The show taught me one thing and that is things do not actually go as you plan it to be. I decided then that I will not let my music go to waste and depend solely on reality shows.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – Are you open to judge any reality shows on music?
Nakash Aziz– If I am given such an opportunity, I would love to judge the show impartially.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – Do you have any plans of setting up a music school?
Nakash Aziz– No, I have no plans as such till now.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana – What is your advice to budding talents?
Nakash Aziz– Do your work with passion. That is what matters the most. You will earn money in the long run but one must never let go of the passion that one has for music.
