Manna Dey may no longer be present physically amongst us, but he continues to live in our memories with his songs. Eminent singers like Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Rakhi Sen, Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta, Suparnokanti Ghosh and Pallav Ghosh presented songs of the late singer and paid their tribute to the legend that Dey was. The main highlight of this event, organized by the Manna Dey Memorial Celebration Committee was the screening of the only film in which the late singer had ever acted in. The name of the film is “Pagol Tomar Jonno Je”.
The Manna Dey movie is about a fan named Anadi Sen (Kharaj Mukherjee). He is so obsessed with the singer and his songs that he even selects a girl named Lolita for marriage as her name is also the name of a song sung by the singer. Trouble starts from the wedding night when Lolita realizes that she may not be her husband’s first love and that his only obsession is Mana Dey and his songs, however, their marriage survives and they live to grow old together. The next set of events unfold when Chameli, their only daughter grows up and suitors come to Anadi’s house to seek her hand in marriage. Problems begin when an USA based boy (played by Jishu Sengupta) comes and calls Manna Dey obsolete. He is immediately rebuked and sent away by Anadi.
After much consideration and help from his colleagues, Anadi selects a boy who is incidentally a great fan of the singer. Anadi’s wife however sparks off trouble when she mistakenly says that Manna Dey is a great friend of Anadi. The boy’s father demands that the singer must be present on the day of the marriage. Anadi falls in trouble and he tries repeatedly to contact the singer. But he becomes so transfixed when he sees him that he forgets to invite him for his daughter’s marriage which was the real purpose of the meeting.
Finally on the day of the marriage, the bridegroom’s father comes to know the truth that Anadi is not a friend of the singer. Since the marriage is over, he decides to apply for divorce for his son right away. Manna Dey’s timely entry at this juncture saves the day for Anadi.
The film is a treasure for the fans of the singer. The story is well scripted and the humor elements in the film add to the appeal of this Bangla Movie. The story of the fan meeting the person he likes comes across well to the audience. Manna Dey shot for the film for ten days. Songs like “Coffee house er sei adda ta aaj r nei” and many more songs of the singer have been used in the film. Kharaj Mukherjee, Paran Bandhopadhyay, Jishu Sengupta have all done a commendable job in the film. Since the film has been shot a few years ago, we find a lean Kharaj and a younger Jishu. Even Kolkata’s lost Park Street Music World can be re-visited in this movie.
On the whole, the initiative of the Manna Dey Memorial Celebration Committee to showcase this film by the late singer is commendable. This film will be available in CDs soon and viewers will be able to watch this Bangla movie online too. This will be quite a collector’s item for sure.
