Interview: French Model Marion Ossent who Features in Upcoming Indo-French Film Burning Kolkata

Marion Ossent is a French model cum actress. She began her career as a model and participated in contests like the the Miss Aube competition and the Miss Champagne Ardennes. She went to become the second runner up in Miss France and this opened the doors for her to work with big names like Chanel, Max Mara and many more. She was bit by the acting bug and she began acting in TV shows and films. She has also worked in an upcoming Indo-French film Burning Kolkata. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent Priyanka Dutta caught up with the model-cum actress who spoke candidly about her work, acting and also her future plans.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaHi Marion, Please tell us something about your background. When did you start acting? Did you take any acting classes?
Marion Ossent– Hi, I have been a model for more than 10 years. Then I started acting through my job by doing tv or internet commercials and model’s role or silhouettes in different films. I am also working on tv, a morning broadcast show on m6 channel in France. I started to like it more and more and I always wanted to act. I was just waiting for the right time to start it. I took some classes in Paris and LA to help me in my acting.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat modeling assignments have you done?
Marion Ossent– I have done a lot of modelling assignments and worked in all kinds of medias like Television, internet, magazines, print catalogues, shows, showrooms, shootings and events. I have also worked in the fashion industry, the car industry, the Formula 1, the commercial animations and events, in different private events and parties, in cosmetics, perfume and shoes.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat do you like about the world of fashion?
Marion Ossent– I used to love Fashion as I was also a fashion design student for 3 years in a design high school in Paris. I always liked the clothes and creativity and admired the trends and the crazy ambiance around it. It has to be fast, new, the best, the most original and unique. There is a great rush and people go crazy with the competition. However, the best thing is the freedom to work with diffeent people in different places all the time. You can travel to a lot of beautiful places and see a lot of things. But later on I felt it to be superficial and hence I thought of shifting my base to acting which I feel is more interesting and personal.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou have been a part of the Indo-French venture Burning Kolkata. Tell us something about your character Charlotte in the film?
Marion Ossent– Charlotte is a very nice and sweet person. She has been in India for 5 years and fell in love with the country. She came as an NGO member with her boyfriend, to help people. She had a hard time in the past and some bad experiences too. But that didn’t change the fact that she wanted to help and be nice to everyone. She welcomes Rimita to the hospital and they become friends. They share everything, live together as roommates, and she introduces her friend Jean Yves to Rimita and they fall in love, before the tragedy happens. Charlotte loves to write everything in her diary and that is how she tells the story from the beginning to the end in flashback-writing and reading.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaHow was the experience of shooting in Kolkata? What did you like and dislike about Kolkata?
Marion Ossent– To be honest, it was not always easy as it is a different world from France and especially Paris. I was the only European girl and everybody was staring at me wherever I went. The weather is hot and humid and the pollution makes you a bit sick. The mosquitoes were disturbing and I also missed the home food. However it is a great experience to see another world, discover new habits, culture, beliefs and rites. I also tried to learn a bit of the language by following the body language. This helped in understanding conversations. Though I missed the usual comfort, I met interesting people and made new friends. This was indeed an adventure for me.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana bangalianaHow was the experience of working with director Kajal Chaudhury?
Marion Ossent– I know him for two years now. The project was about to start 2 years ago and so we kept in touch via email. I was travelling a lot, until he contacted me back when it was ready. I won’t hide that we had some misunderstanding and arguments sometimes but we made it and the result is most important at the end.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaAre you open to doing more films in the Indian languages?

Marion Ossent– Of course, I am open to doing more films in the Indian language. Learning some Bengali and some parts of the script in phonetics was not easy, especially when doing a dialogue with someone speaking to me in another language that I don’t know. English is my second language and so I was pretty tired at the end of the day. But it is a good training and I am to take on some more now.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana What other films have you done?

Marion Ossent– I had some small roles in a few films. Apart from that, two short films will be releasing soon. La grande Traque in French which is an animation film in a video game style will feature me in the lead role. Plus there is a musical comedy about a funny weird family. I play a family member in the film. I am starting my career in films, so I do not have much background to speak on. However, I am taking time and doing interesting projects.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat kind of movies you enjoy working in?
Marion Ossent– I love action, comedy and drama. these are the kind of films I will enjoy working in.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaDo you have a dream role and a dream director with whom you would want to work?
Marion Ossent– I dream about working in an American TV serial-a funny one or a drama type. The serial may be something like Desperate Housewives, Baywatch, ER, House M.D and all those mystical ones that we get to see on television. I like the offbeat humour , the action and I love the American style.
I would love to work with directors like Eric Bress or J. Mackye Gruber. I loved Finale Destination, Butterfly Effect and these are some of my favorite movies. I would love to work with Garry Marshall (in some Valentine’s day style film). Pretty Woman is another film I liked and I will like to work in films of that kind. Sam Mendes, Martin Scorsese, Bryan Singer , Michael Bay,  David O. Russell are the other directors I would like to work with. I love French cinema too and I am open to every kind of roles. The Indian film industry is very innocent and colorful. This makes it interesting too.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat advice will you give to those aspirants who want to make it big in the world of fashion and acting?
Marion Ossent– They just have to try to live their passion. There are no rules; I think you have to do what you really want and work hard for it.
