Friendship, love, relationship, loneliness and getting back to roots; PURANI JEANS tries to fit in all these aspects and more.
First time director Tanushri Chattrji Bassu has a novel concept at hand but fails in its execution. This movie had the trappings of a JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA… with fresh faces but the below average acting of most and juvenile dialogues and situations, especially in the first half pulls the movie down.
The movie goes into the interval with a neat twist, and post that the performances and general execution of the film also improves. Basu ensures that the film bares its soul… but it’s too late in the day.
Nevertheless, you do leave the theater with a feel-good factor of having gone back to your youth. Barring Aditya Seal and Tanuj Virwani, both of who make their debut, the rest of the friends paint a sorry picture as far as their acting goes. Even Rajit Kapoor who plays a small part is nondescript.
The one who stands out is Sarika.
Having said that, credit must be given to Bassu for extracting a fine performance from Seal who plays Sam, the leader of the Kasauli Cowboy Gang. Samuel Joseph Lawrence is the live-wire of the group and is always looking for attention. His background of a broken family is subtly slipped in by Bassu that heightens the plight of the lad.
Towards the end, you heart reaches out to Sam, who wants nothing but love. And when he asks his mother Sarika, “Does anyone even love me?” your heart reaches out to him.
It is moments like these that keep PURANI JEANS from being an out-and-out disaster. Izabelle Leite who plays Nayantara is stiff and disinterested in the proceedings. She is distant in every scene as though thinking of someone else all the time. What was needed was a little more spontaneity and warmth from her performance to make this an even better film.
Even the costumes meant to depict 1996, the year the film is set in, has clothes relevant to the current fashion trend.
Aditya and Tanuj both show glimpses of what to expect in the future with some fine performances.
With intensity in the performances from the rest of the cast, PURANI JEANS Could have been a different story.
