The Kolkata franchise of the much anticipated Indian Super league had its launch ceremony in the presence of Sourav Ganguly (Co-owner, Atletico de Kolkata, Ex-captain of Indian cricket team), Miguel Angel Gil Martin (Owner of Atletico De Madrid), Sanjiv Goenka (Chairman, RP Sanjiv Goenka Group), Harshvardhan Neotia (Chairman, Ambuja Neotia Group) and Utsav parekh (Chairman, SMIFS Capital Markets LTD). This was the first franchise to be launched amongst the eight city franchises of the Indian Super league.
“Our club will try and bring together the best talent to form a team with the driving thought of playing to win the game. Kolkata has been central to football in our country and our objective is to ensure that we regain the position. This time, the difference will be to give football audiences a level of game which will be at par with international standards. This will help in generating passion that we see for the global leagues and tournaments” said Sourav Ganguly. When the former captain was questioned as to whether football will be able to compete with the immense popularity of cricket, he said “We simply do not want to compete. We just want to play. And it is a very wrong idea that two popular games cannot co-exist”.
Atletico will bring its in-depth knowledge and intellectual property in the football space. It also plans to bring top coaches and management staff to India to train the team in technical ability, game vision, physical capacity and teamwork. It will work on a 360 degree football development plan for the nurturing of the talents. The club would also be coming to India to play exhibition games. In future, Atletico will be sending a scout to gain deeper insights into the style of football being played in India. This will be followed by the appointment of a coach in the next 2-3 weeks who will work along with an Indian coach.
Atletico De Kolkata is surely to create a new history in soccer in India.
