Koel Mullick has played the role of a sweet, bubbly character in numerous films but with the upcoming Bengali film Arundhati, the actress will be seen in a completely different avatar. Sholoana Bangaliana Correspondent Priyanka Dutta in a candid chat with the Tolly Queen Koel….
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– The film Arundhati is mainly about reincarnation. What are your personal views on the cycle of birth?
Koel Mullick– I believe in reincarnation and past life. I am not propagating this as I have done this film. This is what I feel sincerely. The soul never dies, it is the body that does. Soul is immortal and is transferred from one body to the other. This is very interesting to me. It has been seen that a grandmother in a family and the granddaughter looks similar. Genes are important but still one is made to think of past life and reincarnation.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Have you read any books regarding reincarnation?
Koel Mullick– Oh! Yes, I have read quite a few books to increase my knowledge on the topic. Moroner Pore, Mrityu Ebong Mrityur Por (written by Rishi Aurobindo) are some of the books that I have read on this topic. In fact I read a lot of Brian Weiss (American psychiatrist) who is into past life regression. How a soul reacts differently when transferred from one body to the other is an amazing issue for me. It amazes me even to think about it.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Indian history has seen the rise of queens like Ahalyabai, Rani Lakshmibai at various times. Have you been inspired by any of them?
Koel Mullick– Well they inspire me no doubt. But women of today like Kiran Bedi, Malala also inspire me. I believe every woman is endowed with the Shakti (or female power). Many of us are aware of this power within us and many of us do not have the idea of this power. It takes a certain situation to realize this power. We worship Ma Durga who is an embodiment of the female power herself.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– The dialogues in this film by N.K.Salil are quite different from the ones that you usually have to deliver in the other films. How did you handle this?
Koel Mullick– (Laughs) Frankly, this was a great challenge.. I used to sit with the dialogue sheet and go on saying them until I felt that I had got it right. This I had to do so that it looked perfect when I said it on the camera. Some of the Bengali words used like “Durjogpurno ratri” were difficult as we hardly use them in our day to day language.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– You have done lot of stunts in this film. How difficult were they?
Koel Mullick– The stunts were very strenuous. I had done some stunts in Rangbaaz but this time I had to do many stunts. This was challenging because boys are brought up playing with guns and they have that aggressive attitude. But girls are more docile and polite as we grow up playing with dolls. Hence I had to get that attitude right and also perform the stunts well.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– You have performed many dance sequences in the film. You have also done Shiva’s Tandav. Which was difficult- the stunts or the dance?
Koel Mullick– The dance was relatively easy as I have been trained in classical dance. I just had to put in energy and aggression in the Tandav dance. But the stunts were something new and this required a lot of effort on my part.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– You are acting opposite Indraneil Sengupta after Dasami. How was the experience?
Koel Mullick– He makes me feel comfortable and I can act freely with him. We understand each other well and this gets projected in the good chemistry on-screen which gets appreciated by the audience.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Banngaliana– What is the USP of Arundhati?
Koel Mullick– We all have worked really hard on the film. Moreover the good versus evil fight with good finally triumphing over evil will be appreciated by the audience. This is very natural and I hope they will be watching this film due to this reason.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Are you turning into a full time action heroine?
Koel Mullick– (Laughs out loud) After Arundhati, I have developed a liking for the genre of action. Please tell the directors and producers to cast me in more action films in future.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Will you ever join politics, given the fact that many actors and actresses are joining politics now?
Koel Mullick– Politics is a different ball game altogether. One needs to be properly educated about this field before entering it. If I ever think that I have acquired enough knowledge about this field, I will then think of joining this field.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Your co-star in many films, Dev has joined politics now. How do you feel about it?
Koel Mullick– I am so happy for him. Now he has a dual responsibility. As an actor he will have to entertain the audience and as a MP, he will have to serve the nation. I am sure he will live up to the expectations that we all have for him. I wish him all the success.
