Interview: Director Shiboprasad Mukherjee on his New Bangla Movie Ramdhanu

Actor-director Shiboprasad Mukherjee has been mesmerizing the audience with his skills  both in front of the camera and behind the scenes and along with Nandita Roy, has been instrumental in making new age Bengali films like Icche, Muktodhara, Alik Sukh which talk about poignant social issues. With the New Kolkata Bangla Movie Ramdhanu releasing on the 6th June, Sholoana Bangaliana Correspondent Priyanka Dutta got to know more about the film and the message that the director wants to convey with it. Excerpts….

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaTell us something about the story of the film Ramdhanu.

Shiboprasad Mukherjee– Mitali was a worried mother. This was the fourth time her five year old son Gogol had failed to pass the admission test in a reputed school. This led Mitali to become desperate. She was determined to get her only son admitted into a reputed missionary school, an opportunity that had been defied to her and her husband Rajat. But she does not give up so easily. She readies herself for the final bid. Does Gogol get through the interview? Will Mitali be able to fulfill her dreams or does she learn a greater lesson from all this and the importance of her child’s well being? Many such moments are captured in the story as it hurtles towards a dramatic climax.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaHow was the experience of working with 260 small students in the film? Was it difficult?

Shiboprasad Mukherjee– Frankly, I feel that children are the most disciplined. They have computer sharp memories and they remember everything you teach them. They are the best actors as they listen to the one command that you give them. Hence it was not much difficult for me to direct them. Moreover Namrata Mukherjee, Samidha Bhaduri and Suranjana Roy had also helped a lot by grooming these little children for the film.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhy did you select Rachana, Sasha and Gargi for the respective  roles?

Shiboprasad Mukherjee– Gargi is one of the most talented and versatile actresses in the Bengali film industry. She has been able to do justice to the role of Mitali much more than our expectations. As for selecting Rachana, I believe she has the best smile in the industry. And the way she interacts with people made us select her. Her smile made her immensely popular with the small children. Sasha is a NRI. Born and brought up in Canada, he will be able to bring conviction to the role of the foreign returned brother of Mitali in the film. Hence we selected him.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYour films always carry a message. What is the message in this film?

Shiboprasad Mukherjee– The message in this film is that best school is just a myth that we have created. One can get the best education from the grandparents, parents and even by watching a bird making a nest. Schools like Mitra Institution and Hare School are still held in high esteem even after the advent of the so-called best schools. This is the point that we want to make with this film.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaThe film has different kinds of music- from nursery rhymes to Rabindra sangeet to classical English music. This reminds us of Sound of Music, which was also a musical. Is there any reference point from that film?

Shiboprasad Mukherjee– There is no reference point. This is a natural course that we have followed. The music has been done to incorporate the seven colors of the rainbow in the film. For instance “We are shining stars” is a takeoff from the nursey rhyme “Baa baa black sheep”. Ramdhanu is actually a rainbow.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat is your level of expectation from the film?

Shiboprasad Mukherjee– Icche, Muktodhara, Alik Sukh and now Randhanu- we simply hope that the message that we wanted to convey reaches the people and they appreciate our efforts.
