Sayani Palit began music training at a young age under the tutelage of various eminent gurus like Pandit Ajay Chakabarty and has overtime gathered wide experience in music. In a candid talk with Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent Priyanka Dutta, the singer revealed much about her passion for music and future plans. Excerpts…
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Tell us a little bit about your background.
Sayani Palit– I started taking Hindusthani classical taleem under Smt. Chandana Chakrabarty when I was 4. Being a past Scholar of ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata from 2009 August to 2014 April got me ample opportunity to have blessings and trainings from many musical maestros. I am still continuing my tutelage under Guru Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and also taking talim from Padma Bhushan Girija Devi ji.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana–You have been undergoing training under teachers like Pandit Ajay Chakrabarty and GirijaDevi. How has this helped in your music career?
Sayani Palit– I am very fortunate to have such gurus. Not only their music but their personality also has been an inspiration for me. I have been
taking lessons from my Guru PT Ajoy Chakraborty and SMT Chandana Chakraborty for the last 19 years which has helped me to improve my thinking process and they have always inspired me to think in new ways and experiment with whatever I have learnt. For the last 2years I have got an opportunity to learn from Appa jee (Girija Devi jee) which has given me a basic idea about Purab ang, Thumri of Benaras and it is indeed an honor to learn from such a living legend.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Who inspires you in Music?
Sayani Palit– Each and every good musician and good music inspires me.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Do you have an idol in music?
Sayani Palit– I cannot take one name. Many singers and musicians inspire me in many ways such as Lata Mangeshkar,Asha Bhosle, Michael Jackson, Yani, A R Rahman and others.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– What is the kind of music that you personally prefer?
Sayani Palit– I love to sing different genres like Romantic numbers, Sufi, Thumri, Contemporary songs, Experimental music and so on. These are also the genres I prefer to listen to.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– You turned composer with your debut Bengali Audio Songs album Khwahishain. What is your next project?
Sayani Palit– Composing music is my passion. I have been composing music since the last 6 years. One of my Self composed Sufi songs has already been released in
2012 album Sur Prabaha. Khwahishain is an album where I have tried to compose melodies that people can hum and connect to my music. After Khwahishain my passion of composing music will definitely continue and I will continue to create new kind of music.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Given an opportunity, would you be interested to compose music for films as a music director?
Sayani Palit– Yes, certainly! As I mentioned earlier, composing is my passion and if this passion turns to be my profession too I will definitely enjoy the journey. Composing music for a film is going to be more interesting as I will be able to depict different emotion through music.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– As a playback singer, what are the projects that you are working on?
Sayani Palit– I have already recorded for movies like Hanuman.com, Proloy, Singur, Pendulam, Swapno dakhe mon (Upcoming). Beside playback singing I have been doing BGM, Ads and Jingles. I would like to mention one special Jingle here “Rajiv Gandhi JeevanDayee Arogya Yojna” an Ad film of Govt. India.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Do you want to start a music school in future?
Sayani Palit– In today’s world people are not interested to learn for a long time. I see children performing in reality shows just after they start learning. I am not blaming any channel or reality show. I just feel music is a subject to learn and after a certain period one should definitely start performing because performing is also very important for a singer or musician. I also believe while teaching one can perfect his/her own skills too. I have started teaching music to few students and would like to continue the tradition of My Guruji and Guruma. I will be very happy if I could start a formal music school in the near future.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– What is music according to you?
Sayani Palit– Music is Life!
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana–You have worked with many reputed music directors. Which other music directors would you like to work with?
Sayani Palit– I would like to work with all the directors who are doing great works. My dream is to work with A R Rahman.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Have you got any offers from Bollywood for singing in Bollywood films?
Sayani Palit– I have already recorded for Veneet Raj Bagga, Rajeev Gupta of Bollywood but I have not got offers to record for mainstream Bollywood films yet.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Sayani Palit– I see myself to becoming more perfect and a versatile playback singer. I also aim to be a better vocalist and composer. I would also like to collaborate with
national/international musicians for experimental projects.
