The Pankaj Mullick Foundation of Music and Art released an audio CD Ashruto Rabindranath- Tagore Unheard at Press Club. The album consists of musical compositions made by the collaborations of Pankaj Kumar Mullick and Rabindranath Tagore. Rajib Gupta (Grandson of Mullick) & Jhinuk Gupta (Granddaughter-in-law) conceived the idea of the cd which features eight unheard songs. Mr S.F.Karim (Chief Business Manager, Saregama), Bickram Ghosh, Tanmoy Bose, veteran television presenter Pankaj Saha graced the evening along with performers.
The audio CD revolves around the reflection of Rabindrasangeet in the life of music maestro Pankaj Kumar Mullick with a special focus on those songs that had lyrics by Tagore and music by Pankaj Kumar Mullick. Eventually, he was the only music composer whom Tagore allowed to set tune to his lyrics. He even used Tagore songs in Bengali films for the first time. Pankaj Kumar Mullick also played a key role in popularizing Tagore songs back then. He even used Tagore tunes his way in Hindi film songs composed by him.
Each song has a historical significance besides many untold stories. There are also songs composed on request of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to encourage Bengalis after the Bhasa Andolan took place in Bangladesh. Mullick set tunes to the poems Prashno ( Bhagaban Tumi Dut Pathayechho), Suprabhat ( Rudra Tomar Darun Dipti).
The CD also contains a rare picture with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and Satyajit Ray’s quotation about the musical maestro,”Pankaj Mullick earned legendary fame and popularity as a singer and teacher of Rabindrasangeet. He devoted his whole life to this cause using the media of the film, the radio and the gramophone – he succeeded in endearing himself to music loving Indians all over the country.”
Ashruto Rabindranath-Tagore Unheard CD will be a collector’s delight for sure.
