He stole many a heart when he made his debut on television as Gora in the hit serial Gaaner Oparey. With Baapi Bari Jaaa, he made his debut on the big screen. With acting genes running deep in his blood, Arjun Chakraborty has already a huge fan following, courtesy his good acting and his handsome looks. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent engaged the actor in a candid conversation. Excerpts…

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou made your acting debut with the hit serial, Gaaner Oparey. How has that helped in developing your acting skills?

Arjun Chakraborty– Gaaner Oparey happened quite suddenly and I’m glad it did. Firstly, Joydeep (Mukherjee) kaku has been a family friend for long and having him as my director made it very easy. Moreover, working with Ma, Baba & Dada together gave it a very homely feel. That was my primary training and it has made me the actor I am today.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaAfter stating with television, you shifted to acting in films. Which do you enjoy more?

Arjun Chakraborty– I am currently enjoying working in films, but my debut in a television serial will always have the most special place in my life because I enjoyed it the most. Now there’s more of a professional approach to all the work I do whereas then it was more of a “play-as-you-work” scenario.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaThe transition from television to films- was it difficult or easy?

Arjun Chakraborty– I didn’t look at the transition as a transition. I treated it (Bapi Bari Ja) as just another new project, so I was not very worried when I started my first film. I just did what I had been doing previously. Sudeshna Di & Rana Da’s guidance saw me through.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou have tasted success with all your films. How does it feel?

Arjun Chakraborty– Thank you for being kind, but I’m not sure if all of them have been successful in every sense of the term. I was never very perturbed about box office collections, so I guess people’s appreciation has been everything for me so far. It feels great of course. Hope to continue.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaBonkubabu released this Friday and have been receiving good response. How does it feel to be a part of such a film?

Arjun Chakraborty– Bonku Babu promised to be a family entertainer right from the day I heard the script and I’m glad it turned out that way too, eventually. Honestly, I have been getting mixed reviews, but then again people are being kind so I’m happy. I am very glad that I got to work with seniors who are known all over the country for their acting prowess. I learnt a lot working with them. I believe it brought out the best in me. All thanks to Anindya Bikash Dutta for choosing me.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaHow has your fans reacted to your acting in the film?

Arjun Chakraborty– Fans are my well-wishers so they seem to be enjoying every bit of it. Some have been critical, but it’s all a part of this profession. I like the fact that I danced and fought in a proper choreographed way for the first time in Bonku Babu. Hopefully fans will appreciate those aspects of this film.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat is the next project that you are working on?

Arjun Chakraborty– I have finished Aniket Chattopadhyay‘s ‘Janla Diye Bou Palalo’ and it should release this year. Also on the floors is Arindam Dey’s ‘Kokhon Tomar Ashbe Telephone’.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYour parents are well known actors. Has that ever created a pressure on you performance? Do you ask them to help you in selecting a certain role?

Arjun Chakraborty– Thankfully it has never created any pressure because my directors have been gentle and kind. They wanted my individuality and gave me a lot of freedom every time. It was always more about bringing the characters to life and not about “proving” myself. I always ask for my parents’ help with certain scenes and decisions regarding accepting a project. They have always maintained that I should take the final call. I ask them for guidance and advice but they never ever interfere.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaGaurab, your elder brother is in the same profession. How will you rate him as an actor?

Arjun Chakraborty– I would rate my brother as the best in our generation and would give him 11 out of 10. There’s a lot I wish to learn from him. I look up to him always.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat do you keep in mind when in the process of selecting a role?

Arjun Chakraborty– Firstly, the script has to be appealing. The subject has to have a connection with the audience to some extent. And I look for a role that has an important contribution in the flow of the story. Also, I try to accept characters that are unlike what I’ve done before- his characteristics, his profession, his way of life etc.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaDo you have any plans of again working in a serial?

Arjun Chakraborty– A mega serial is not the only kind of television project that can only be made in recent times. There are various kinds of shows we see these days. I would love to work in television if there’s something different, a new concept.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat are your hobbies?

Arjun Chakraborty– I enjoy fitness and sports. Unlike what most people think, I don’t work out because I’m an actor and I have to look good. I genuinely enjoy keeping fit and so I enjoy playing and watching football. I also love reading and now I’m thinking of taking up cooking. That has always interested me.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou have a lot of female fans. How do you handle the adulation?

Arjun Chakraborty– Not sure how many male and female fans I have, but yes, there are well wishers as I can see on social networking sites. The appreciation feels wonderful. Thankfully I have not reached a stage where I’ll be mobbed in a shopping mall or on the street. So I have the liberty of enjoying whatever I want to do.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaMany of the female fans also have a question for you- Are you single?

Arjun Chakraborty– (laughs out loud) No I am not single. I have been in a relationship for many years with Sreeja.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaDo you have plans of doing a Bollywood film? Have you been approached by any director?

Arjun Chakraborty– I do want to work in the Hindi film industry some day. I haven’t been approached by anyone yet. Maybe someday soon I will be working in a Bollywood film.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhere do you see yourself in the next five years?

Arjun Chakraborty– In the next five years I definitely want to be a better actor than I am today and I wish to take up fitness even more seriously, maybe do something small or big in that industry as well. I want to work for nature and wildlife too.

Having inherited great acting skills from his parents, Arjun with every other project comes up as a new revelation and we sincerely hope that this very innocent looking talented young man makes it big in the Bengali Film Industry and soon lands up a big role with a big banner Hindi Film too.
