Her Ghazals will keep you in a trance. Her soulful voice will calm your senses. Apart from being a singer, she was also an actress. The lady with such unique talent is none other than Begum Akhtar. As a tribute to the singer, a play Aanartita will be staged to pay respects to her on her hundredth birth anniversary. A press conference was recently held to announce this staging of the play on the singer-actress. Present at the occasion were Alokparna Guha, Raj Narayan Bhattacharya, Debasish Majumder, Dahlia Raut and Indrani Majumder.
“With the help of this play, we will be presenting to the audience the autobiography of a courtesan dancer. In the play she talks about her life and many more unknown facts. Through the journey of the ups and downs of her life, her transformations will be shown” said Debasish Majumder.
Alokparna Guha who is behind the dance visualizations of this play was visibly excited to be associated with such a play. “In this play there is an intermingling of dance with Drama. I was first contacted to perform as a solo dancer. It was later on that I was given this duty of visualizing the dance sequences in the play. Dance consists of seventy percent of the play” said Alokparna Guha.
Raj Narayan Bhattacharya whose research child is Aanartita went to Banaras previous year to shoot for a documentary. The topic was on Thumri songs. For the same purpose, he went to a place called Ramnagar and met a courtesan who shed light on the life of Begum Akhtar. This got him inspired to make a play on the life of the courtesan singer/actor.
Actors like Indrani Moitra, Pinaki Biswas, Anirban Ghosh, Babun saha and Poulami Mukherjee will be seen in pivotal roles in this play. The play has been produced by Amazing Centre for Performing Arts.
The play will be staged on the 4th of July at G. D. Birla Sabhaghar.
