Hero Number 1, Coolie Number 1 or Aunty Number 1- he is indeed Hero Number 1. The huge rush at Roxy, Park Hotels for the press meet of his upcoming film Abhinay Chakra was proof of his immense popularity even today. He is none other than Bollywood Hero Govinda. The actor was in the city for the promotion of his upcoming film Abhinay Chakra with Richa Sharma, the female lead in his film. Excerpt from the conversation with Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent Priyanka Dutta.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Tell us something about the film Abhinay Chakra…
Govinda– The film is about a bold and fearless police inspector which is being played by me. He takes decisions while tackling criminals and also opposes the high handedness of the corrupt politicians. All individuals living in the society do act in different situations. The individual who can overcome this will become the winner at the end. This is what the story of the film is also about.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Is this out and out action film. Or do we get to see you doing some comedy scenes too?
Govinda– The film is a blend of both action and comedy. You will find Govinda type comedy and action sequences too.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– You have turned producer with this film. Did you have any extra pressure on your shoulders as you had to act and also deal with the production issues?
Govinda– I am a huge devotee of Maa Tara and I have also named my production house Mangal Tara. With her blessings I did not face any hurdle during the shooting of the film.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– What was the biggest challenge that you had to face while shooting for this film?
Govinda– The only challenge that I had to face was to lose weight. I was apprehensive whether I will be able to lose weight and look good for the role. But with God’s grace and hard work I have been able to get rid of the extra pounds that I had put on.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Even at this age, you look glamorous. What is the secret behind this glamour?
Govinda– (Laughs in the signature Govinda style) Is this a compliment or a joke? Well I feel that I have been working hard to keep myself fit. Also my parents’ blessings also help me a lot in whatever I do.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Why did you step into production so late?
Govinda-(Thinks for a moment) Yes I am a bit late. But I was busy doing all kinds of roles like hero, negative character and comedy roles. The money that I made by doing such roles has been invested in the formation of the production company. However I was apprehensive of the fact whether I should again don the cap of the hero. So I asked my wife who asked me to go ahead with the idea. And hence I became a hero again.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– You and David Dhawan had created a different kind of comedy genre in Bollywood films. Do you think the films made today are living up to the mark?
Govinda– Well times have changed. The films made today are being done keeping in mind the tastes of the audience which has undergone changes. It is better not to compare them as both had the aim of entertaining the audience. When I first worked with David Dhawan, it was on Sanjay Dutt’s request. I had no idea that I will be doing so many films with him. However our chemistry clicked and we have done so many good films together.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– You will also have to compete now with the 100 crore and 200 crore club films. What is your take on it?
Govinda– This actually amazes me. We also used to work before but we never worried about these issues. Let’s see whether my film can enter any such club.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– So now that you have opened a production house. Do you have any plans of producing a Bengali film?
Govinda– I am interested in producing a Bengali film only if someone helps me. I am not much aware of the film industry here and hence I will need someone to guide me.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– What is the USP of the film Abhinay Chakra?
Govinda– The film is essentially about how to get rid of grave situations without resorting to violence. I can vouch that after watching the film many youngsters will not resort to violence and instead will solve things in a non-violent manner.
The film Abhinay Chakra releases on Ganesh Chaturthi this year.
