Kolkata’s history has been recorded from the day the English East India Company landed in the city. This was the time when the company consolidated the trade business in Bengal in 1690. Job Charnock, an administrator who was an employee in the English East India Company is credited with founding of the city of Kolkata. Sunil Memorial Foundation, Tele Cine Society and Kolkata Today celebrated the 325th birthday of Kolkata at Desapriyo Park in the august presence of celebrities. Soumitra Chatterjee, Banasree Sengupta, Piloo Bhattacharya, Wasim Kapoor, Chuni Goswami, Samidh Mukherjee were present at the event.
Speaking with Sholoana Bangaliana, the Dada Saheb Phalke Awardee Sri Soumitra Chatterjee said “I have roamed through the city streets in my youth. I have seen the city change in front of my eyes. People like Chuni, Wasim have not only maintained the reputation of the city with their good work in their respective fields but also helped in adding to the prestige of the city in the national and international level”.
Celebration of 325 Years of Kolkata
Chuni Goswami also highlighted on the fact that the people of Kolkata had a great role to play in the freedom struggle. “This is enough reason for us to be proud of our city” said the eminent footballer.
Director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury who had is still basking in the glory of his latest release Bunohaansh wished that people like Soumitra Chatterjee, Wasim Kapoor, Chuni Goswami must live for 325 years more and continue to enrich the culture of the city.
A book cover based on the city of Kolkata including a few write-ups by various artists and photography by eminent photographer Dipanjan Ghosh was also unveiled by the celebrities. A cake with a motif of Kolkata on it was cut by the celebrities to celebrate the birthday of the city.
