Interview: Ethical Hacker Ankit Fadia
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– When did you became interested in ethical hacking?
Ankit Fadia– There is no one incident which resulted in my choice. Hacking is something forbidden and the Forbidden Fruit always attracts. The illegal side of hacking got me interested initially. I was given a computer by my parents when I was 10. Initially I used to play games. It was when I was twelve years old that I became interested in hacking and when I was 14, I wrote my first book, which got huge response. Slowly I converted my hobby into a full time profession.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– From an ethical hacker to an accomplished tech-writer, how was the journey?
Ankit Fadia– Well, the journey has been great. I used to host a show What the Hack. I used to give advice on apps and websites on each episode. I interacted with a lot of young people and the common grievance was that they did not get good jobs even after completing the course. So I focused more on the career aspects in this field. I actually think that one can use technology to increase their career prospects.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– So you think that there is a career in ethical hacking in India?
Ankit Fadia– It is a full time career actually. If you go to Naukri.com and type ethical hacker, a whole set of jobs will come up. Moreover it has been published by the Indian Government that there will be a demand of 4.7 lakh cyber security professionals by 2015. Hence there is a huge opportunity as there is a huge demand in the country.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Given a chance, will you like to teach ethical hacking in schools?
Ankit Fadia– I started a course in 2007 actually named Ankit Fadia Certified Ethical Hacker. This course has already been taught to 20,000 people. Earlier it was available through Reliance and now it is available through Pearson. I love teaching and I enjoy writing as well.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– What will be the topic of your fiction novel that you plan to write next?
Ankit Fadia– Once I am done with the promotions of the book by next month, I will start with this fiction novel. I plan to release the book by the middle of next year. It will be about a group of friends. The main lead will be a hacker by profession. He is in love with a girl in his college just like any other normal guy. The group falls in trouble and the hacker must come up with a hacking scam to get out of this issue.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Tell us more about what to look forward to in this new book?
Ankit Fadia– The new book will be giving the readers ideas about useful free apps and also about ways of updating the professional life. For instance people in India only download apps like Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp on their smart phones. But there are useful apps like refresh which gives an individual detailed data about an individual by going through the various social networking accounts. But people hardly use them. The book also has a chapter on how to enhance your resume and make it stand out among a crowd of resumes. This book will actually help individuals in enhancing their professional life technologically.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– What are your expectations from the book?
Ankit Fadia– The first book that I wrote and the last published book were best sellers. I hope this one gets the same appreciation. Earlier the books on hacking catered to a small reading group. But now the group has expanded.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Will you like your book to be adapted for the silver screen like those of Chetan Bhagat’s?
Ankit Fadia– Which writer will not like that? But as of now I have no such plans. I wish to focus on my writing now. With time my work will be appreciated and one day my writing may be adapted for the big screen.
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Finally, you are into ethical hacking. Have you ever been the victim of hacking?
Ankit Fadia– (laughs) Well yes, my website has been hacked quite a few times. Once the person who had hacked my website sent me a mail stating how he hacked it and how it can be repaired. Moreover the students whom I teach, they also try to hack my website. Using the techniques on your teacher is very exciting for them. Nothing is hundred percent secure. Even the FBI website gets hacked. Hence seeing my website getting hacked is no big deal.
On behalf of Sholoana Bangaliana, we wish Ankit Fadia the Very Best and hope that all his books become undisputed best sellers for years to come.
