About three hundred students from twenty leading schools of the city participated along with Rotarians and eminent dignitaries in an awareness walk on the issue of Swachh Bharat Campaign. The awareness walk which had been organized by the Rotary Club of Belur & Dist Interact Council Team started from the Victoria Memorial Main Gate which prominently stands out as a landmark in Kolkata.
The Swachh Bharat Campaign was flagged off by Lt. Gen Raman Dhawan, VSM**, GOC – Bengal Area (Eastern Command). He also delivered a motivating speech and stressed on three R’s which are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. He also laid importance on the fact children are the best propagators of such messages and urged the children to do their bit for the country. He also witnessed the performance of a group of children to a few skits and was pleased to see the rising awareness of children on this important issue.
The school children who were present at the awareness walk also distributed pamphlets carrying messages like Don’t throw trash on Road, Keep our Rivers clean, Don’t spit on the pavement, Don’t urinate in the open, Use Public toilets for nature’s call and many more such placards. The walk that went through the other landmarks of the city lying in the vicinity culminated at Rotary Sadan on Chowringhee Road. All through the walk there were slogans echoing GO GREEN, SWACHH BHARAT ZINDABAD, and WE PLEDGE TO KEEP INDIA CLEAN. This walk was organized in keeping with the clarion call of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Clean India; Clean City: Clean Environment. This has been initiated to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary in 2019.
Steps of this kind will surely help in cleaning up the country. However the common people must raise their awareness and also do their bit for the country. Sholoana Bangaliana urges its readers and followers to participate in this campaign and extend a helping hand towards the progress of our nation.
