Interview- Actress Sushmita Bhattacharya on her Debut in Upcoming Bengali Film Chitra

She is a theatre actor who will be making her debut with the upcoming Bengali film Chitra. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent engaged the actress Sushmita Bhattacharya in a candid conversation. Excerpts from the conversation…

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWith Chitra, you are making your debut as an actress. How did you get the break?

Sushmita Bhattacharya– I am lucky to be a part of a film like Chitra. Actually, I was doing a short film directed by Abhigyan at that time. He asked me to give the character in Chitra a thought. But it was out of the blue, when he called me up after a few months asking me to do a role in the film. I was quite nervous initially but when he narrated the script and made me clear about the character, I fell in love with it. In our next meeting, I signed the film.

Did you have any prior acting experience? If so, where?

I have a background in theatre. I have been doing theatre from a very tender age. Though, it had taken a backseat in the core due to some personal issues in recent times. With “Natkhat Sarat”, a short film directed by Abhigyan, I made my first appearance before the camera. It was really challenging but I love to undertake challenges.

Tell us something about your role in Chitra.

I am lucky to have played Chandrima in “Chitra”. She is the elder sister of Chitra. Chandrima is a woman who is married in a conservative family and by that time the crisis sets in her life. But she is extremely confident and feels strongly about expressing her opinion. She is not a woman who can be easily defeated. She speaks up against various social happenings and attacks on women in the film.

How was the experience shooting with experienced actors like Sudeshna Roy in Chitra? Did she give any tips to you?

There are numerous scenes where I have shared screen space with actor-director Sudeshna Roy. She is extremely supportive and loving. She has always helped me to enhance my acting skills. I have learned a lot from her. Biswajit Chakraborty , too, is really nice. I remember my first scene with both of them and I was extremely tensed. But, I just can’t forget the way they inspired me to perform better. Both of them are extremely polite, down to earth, understanding and exceptionally supportive. I really feel blessed to have worked with both of them.

How was debutant director Abhigyan Mukherjee? How was the working equation with him?

As I mentioned earlier, this is not the first time I have worked with him. I have worked in his two short fictions earlier. Abhigyan is really matured and strict as a film-maker. He knows exactly what he wants his actors to perform. He is confident, talented and supportive. He is certain and prepared about the shots before he turns up on the set. It was always comfortable for me to work with such a young and disciplined director.

Can you share some shooting experiences that you had on the sets?

Actually, there are numerous. We really had some nice time-both on-shot and off-shot. It was really fun to work with Pujarini, Neel, Jit, Debargya, Sudeshna di, Biswajit da and the other actors including our director Abhigyan and DOP Rana Dasgupta. Even, I got to learn so many things from the people who stay behind the camera. It was an amazing experience and I want to experience more and more in the near future.

Since, this is your debut film, what are your expectations from the film?

It was sheer luck to get a chance to work in a feature film like Chitra. I have tried to present my character in the best way possible. Hopefully, people will accept me and each and everyone who has dedicated their heart and soul to the film. Fingers crossed!!

Do you have any other projects in hand?

Yes! It will be going on floors shortly. But, it is too early to disclose things regarding the film due to some professional reasons. You will get to know about it in sometime.

Given a choice, what kind of films would you like to do in future?

As, I have told you earlier that I love to face challenges, so I would love to do some challenging roles. Playing Chandrima was quite challenging and I loved it.

Do you idolize anyone in acting? If so, who?

There are so many of them. Naseeruddin Shah, Vidya Balan, Irfaan Khan, Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen and so many. I just love the way they act. They are so natural. But, keeping all this aside, I am madly in love with Sharukh Khan and Christian Bale (Laughs out loud).

We wish Sushmita all the best for her debut film and sincerely hope that she mesmerizes the audience with her acting talent.
