Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet 2015
“Oh!! From Bob Biswas to Shabor Dasgupta- this has been a great promotion for me. A murderer in one film to an inspector in Kolkata Police is a remarkable feat indeed” said actor Saswata Chatterjee. Abir Chatterjee and Saswata Chatterjee engaged in a candid conversation with eminent journalist Gautam Bhattacharya about the change and continuity in Bengali detective films. Abir Chatterjee has played the role of Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi while Saswata has played the role of Shabor Dasgupta.
The recent trend among the audience who has been accepting the detective films more than the other commercial films can be attributed to the fact that there is a literary connect already established, felt actor Abir Chatterjee. “It may also be due to the fact that those stories have better tales to narrate to the audience. This may be ascribed to the success of the detective films among the audiences. Moreover the number of films made in Tollywood is huge. The audience may become confused as to which film to see and in the process many good films are often not watched by them. The film makers and the distributors must take care to focus on the quality rather than on the quantity now” said Abir Chatterjee.
When asked whether Saswata Chatterjee will like to be cast in roles like Byomkesh Bakshi or Feluda, the actor replied with a smile “I want to be cast in almost any role that can be thought of. However Feluda will not be right for me as Feluda is over six feet in height and I am not”.
The two actors who had worked together in the Byomkesh films directed by Anjan Dutt described their work experience as special and worth cherishing. “In the last film that released on Byomkesh Bakshi, I missed Apu da as he did not have many scenes with me” added Abir Chatterjee.
The conversation ended with the two actors answering questions from the audiences.
