Feluda: Gen Next ; A Discussion on the Gen Y Sleuth
“Well, I had done three films on Byomesh Bakshi and now I want to focus completely on the films on Feluda. Feluda has been my childhood hero and to bag the role is a dream come true” said Abir Chatterjee with a smile. The actor was present along with Sabyasachi Chakraborty and director Sandip Ray to share their views on a sleuth special session at the Kolkata Literature Festival. Titled Feluda: Gen Next, the session was moderated by Tridib K Chatterjee, Hon General Secretary, Publishers and Booksellers Guild.
While discussing about Feluda, one of the most popular sleuths of Bengali literature, director Sandip Ray said “When I decided that I will be directing films, the first thought was about directing Feluda. The stories on Feluda appealed to me highly and I thought why not make them into films”. The director however refused to finish the unfinished stories written by his father, late Satyajit Ray. “Let them remain as they are. Getting into his shoes and writing a Feluda story is a huge task for me. It is better that those stories remain in that way” added the director.
Sabyasachi Chakraborty who had played the role of the detective Feluda prior to Abir Chatterjee said “I am not the jealous kind. You see I cannot simply go on doing all the stories of the sleuth. I must give the other talented actors the chance to portray the sleuth in their own way. Moreover since Abir is no longer acting as Byomkesh, I can do the matured and aged roles of Byomkesh if the need arises”.
Abir Chatterjee who is portraying the role of Feluda however explained that he had a tough time to unlearn many things. “Babu da (Sandip Ray) asked me not to see the Feluda films acted by Soumitra Chatterjee and Sabyasachi Chakraborty. The problem is I have seen them so any times that they are stuck in my mind. I had to take the pains of deleting them from my memory and presenting Feluda as I understand him. This was a mammoth task and I am glad people have appreciated me” said the actor with his killing dimpled smile.
Sandip Ray also cleared the fact that his next film will also not have the character of Jatayu as he has not found the right person to play the role yet. “The trouble is this character is jinxed. The actors who had played the role are all dead. And hence I cannot ask any actor to do the role” he added. The director also commented that he had no plans as such of making Feluda too tech-savvy or making a Hindi film on Feluda. “If a competent director wants to make a film on Feluda, the person is welcome to do so. But I feel that Feluda’s Bangaliana will go when the film will be made in Hindi” said Sandip Ray.
The engaging conversation ended with interaction of the audience with the stars.
