Rabindra Bharati University recently organized an event at Jorasanko Thakurbari Tagoriana: a Western Tribute to Tagore. The event consisted essentially of Western classical art songs that use Tagore’s poetry as the text.
The program Tagoriana featured Aidan Soder (mezzo soprano), Jennifer Heemstra ( pianist) and Megatithi Bandyopadhyay ( Rabindrasangeet exponent).Also present on this occasion were Prof. Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury, Vice Chancellor, Rabindra Bharati University and Prof. Goutam Ghosh, Head of the Department of Instrumental Music and Director J.N. Tagore Centre of Research at the Rabindra Bharati University.
The Jorasanko concert Tagoriana: a Western Tribute to Tagore – consisted of Western classical art songs that have used Tagore’s poetry as the texts. The music written for voice and piano, were all original music which had no affiliation to Tagore’s melodies.
The songs presented at the concert were composed by the following composers: John Alden Carpeneter (American), Frank Bridge (British), Franco Alfano (Italian), Karol Szymanowski (Polish, but the songs are in German), and Karim Al-Zand (American).
Tagoriana: a Western Tribute to Tagore was conceived by Aidan Soder.
Events of this nature show how relevant Rabindranath Tagore is even in this age of globalization.
