Interview: Actress Paoli Dam on Upcoming Bengali Film ‘Ajana Batash’; “The film’s success would be a Fitting Tribute to the Late Director”, says Paoli

A press conference was organized for director late Anjan Das’ last directed film Ajana Batas at Hotel Hindusthan International recently. Paoli Dam, Vikram Chatterjee and Chandradeep Das (son of late Anjan Das) were present to address the media and interact with them. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent engaged actress Paoli Dam in a candid chat about her experience of working in this film.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Tell us something about the character that you play in the film Ajan Batas….

Paoli Dam– I play the role of Deepa who works in an advertising firm. She is just like the other girls that you will be seeing everyday around in your locality. She suffers from loneliness. This is very topical an issue among individuals residing in the cities. They work like a machine and when they go back home, they often suffer from loneliness. They often do not have someone to talk and share their inner feelings with. The same is the case with Deepa. The subject is difficult but Anjan da has portrayed it beautifully in the film. A director of his caliber could only do justice to such topics.

Ajana Batas for you is…??

For me Ajana Batas is a very poetic and lyrical film. This is the kind of film which was liked by Anjan da. Joy Goswami’s writings were appreciated by Anjan da so much that he had made two films (Saaj Batir Rupkotha and Jara Bristite Bhijechilo) before. This film is also made on a writing of Joy Goswami. It is a very beautiful film.

You have worked with Anjan Das before too. What was the experience like?

Yes, I have worked with Anjan da before in Banshiwala in 2010. He was a great person to actually work with. I simply cannot believe even now that he is no more with us. The director is the captain of the ship and when we are on the verge of this film’s release, he is not with us. This is a huge loss. When we were shooting the film way back in 2013, Anjan da was very sick. He used to worry whether the film will ever be released. The best thing is the film is releasing and this is the best tribute that we can pay towards him. I am grateful to Vignesh Films who have come forward to help in the release of this film.

Could you relate with the character of Deepa when you were shooting for the film?

Yes, I could actually relate with the character of Deepa at certain levels. Like all individuals, even actors have their share of ups and downs in their lives. Deepa did not have friends to share her trouble or anxieties with. But I have it in the form of you all (smiles broadly). However I would also like to point out that there are times when having a friend is also not enough. You often cannot share your inner turmoil with the person.

Though a clichéd question; what are your expectations from this film?

Paoli Dam- I have high expectations from the film. Since this is Anjan Das’s last film, I will urge the audiences to go to the hall and see the film. Let them decide for themselves. This is the best way to pay tribute to the late director.

With music by Partho Sengupta, the film also stars Koushik Sen and Shankar Chakraborty in important roles. Ajana Batas is slated for release on the 27th of March.
