Vidhu Vinod Chopra Promoting Broken Horses

“Broken Horses is as original as a film can become” said film maker Vidhu Vinod Chopra at the conference of the film Broken Horses. Prior to the press conference the film was also screened for the press delegates.

The film maker last visited the city during his film Three Idiots. However he used to visit the city during his FTII days. He also remembered the time when he used to roam around the Nandan premises during the Kolkata Film Festival time.

The film’s shooting was completed in the span of thirty three days. The ace film maker spoke highly about the professionalism of the Hollywood stars. “The people working in Bollywood are people with big hearts. The people in Hollywood however may not be warm but they are extremely professional. I explained Vincent about a shot and he replied that he already knew it. He had already read about the shot from the mail that I sent him. I mean they have a great level of professionalism which is extremely impressive”.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra who is also a self professed fan and admirer of director Ritwik Ghatak expressed his gratitude to the director as he had learnt many nuances like pause, use of silence from him. “I found Satyajit Ray to be a perfect gentleman, more on the lines of a British gentleman. He maintained some distance with the students. We were students then and I never had the courage to approach him” added the director.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra also mentioned that he will be staying out of the race for the Oscars. “I have always seen fellow directors going crazy about Oscars and the various awards given to Bollywood films. But this I feel is marketing on television show. I have not gone to any award ceremonies for the past few years. I received my first Oscar nomination in 1979 for student short documentary. The documentary was titled ‘An encounter with Faces’. I have seen incidents when an actress who is more deserving has not been given the Oscar. I am not saying I will not be accepting the Oscar if I ever get one. But to me, audience appreciation is more valuable as they are not marketing gimmicks”.

The director gave us a hint that in future the audiences may get to see more Hollywood films directed by him, provided he gets an interesting script. As an audience, we fervently hope he lands up with a good script.
