Singer Manna Dey’s Birthday Celebrated
To celebrate the birthday of the late singer Manna Dey, Manna Dey Sangeet Academy organized a musical evening recently at Vidyamandir auditorium. Acclaimed director Satarupa Sanyal and S. F. Karim (Saregama India) were present as the special guests at the event.
Manna Dey Sangeet Academy was founded on Manna Dey’s birthday (1st of May). The academy has been arranging seminars and live performances on music at regular intervals too. Every year the academy provides Sangeet Ratna Manna Dey award to the topper in Rabindra Sageet discipline of the Post Graduate course from Rabindra Bharati Univesity. They also offer Manna Dey Sangeet Academy Awards for the upcoming young talents by arranging musical competitions. A website has also been launched depicting the life and career of the late singer.
Speaking at the occasion, director Satarupa Sanyal said “When I approached Manna da for making the docu-feature film entitled Jiboner Jalsaghorey, I understood what a great human being he was personally. I earlier knew him as a great singer; the meetings made me realize that he is an equally good person at heart”.
Satinath Mukhopadhyay acted as the anchor of the event. Surya Bhattacharya, Pallab Ghosh, Mahua Bose, Rupa Sarkar and others performed various songs sung by the late singer at the event. A photography exhibition featuring rare photographs of the singer was also exhibited at Gaganendra Pradarshashala, Nandan.
