Rabindra Jayanti Celebrated with Launch of Tagore Special Menu
What better way to celebrate the birthday of the Bard than by organizing a special menu on his birthday. This was the idea behind the special menu titled Thakur Barir Heshel by De Sovrani Hotel on Tagore’s birthday. The event was graced with the presence of the great grandson of Rabindranath Tagore, Mr. Sunanda Thakur.
Tagore apart from experimenting with his writing style was also an avid experimenter when it came to foods. Sunanda Thakur revealed stories (which he had heard from his elders) that Tagore used to ask his wife to experiment with different food items. He also used to eat different cuisines like the British cuisine (which he tasted during his visit to the United Kingdom).
The special menu consisted of Tagore’s favorite dishes like Sol Begun, Irish Stew, Chitol mach aar chalta diye mugger daal, Shosha o narkel doodh die chingri and many more such mouth watering delicacies. These recipes were based on Tagore’s niece’s expansive documentary titled Thakubarir Ranna. A statue of Tagore was made from margarine on the special occasion.
Sunanda Thakur when asked whether the Tagore household did anything special on Tagore’s birthday said “The people around us do so many things on his birthday that we do not get to do anything”.
The special menu organized on the Bard’s birthday was indeed a treat for the food lovers and helped them to understand the Bard as a food loving Bengali.
