Tanu-“Yeh aadmi shaadi ke baad har taraf se aadrak ki tarah baad raha hain!”

Manu- “Toh mein shaadi se pehle kaun sa Hrithik Roshan tha??”

When this is the dialogue pattern between a husband and wife, you can very well understand what to expect next. The recently released Tanu Weds Manu Returns is the film where this conversation takes place between the lead characters Tanu and her husband Manu. The recently released film is a sequel to the original film Tanu Weds Manu which released a few years ago.

Tanu and Manu is a married couple now and have been tolerating each other in their four years of marriage. The film begins with the couple attending a counseling session (such is the sorry state of their marital status), at the end of which the husband is kept at the asylum. Tanu returns back to her home in Kanpur and asks Pappi to rescue him from the asylum. Manu lands up in Delhi to give a lecture and meets a look alike of Tanu named Kusum Sangwan, who is a student at the University of Delhi. Sparks fly and they fall in love with each other. Trouble ensues when it comes to Manu’s knowledge that she had been already selected for Raja Awasthi. And once again the same old problem of the prequel follows in this film. However Manu decides to marry Kusum despite all obstacles. Does he finally marry Kusum? What does Tanu do? The film answers all these questions effectively.

Take a bow director Anand L Rai for making an interesting and engaging sequel to the super hit film released a few years ago as this is definitely a rarity in Bollywood. Not many directors in Bollywood have successfully made sequels. This is indeed a feather in Mr. Rai’s cap. The film in many parts is even better than Tanu Weds Manu. The simple yet well told story captures the attention of the audience. There is a breezy flow to the story which makes it attractive. The quirky dialogues also have to be given due credit for making the film such fun to watch.

The director also touched upon the honor killing issue when Kusum’s family members try to kill Manu and Pappi as they belong to different castes. Touches of this kind in such a fun filled film are well appreciated.

The only complaint that I have about the film is the fact that the ending is too predictable. How I wish the director had done something else to tame the wild Tanu in this film. That would have made the film even more paisa wasool for the audiences.

Screenplay by Himanshu Sharma captured the subtle nuances of the different languages and also of the culture differences of Kanpur and Haryana well. It gives a raw Indian feel to the film.

Music by Krsna Solo and Tanishk- Vayu matches well with the enthusiasm and feel of the film. It gives the film the much needed tempo and helps in carrying forward the narrative.

Kangana Ranaut proves yet again that she can be depended upon for any challenging character. She is a bundle of energy and she breathes life into both Tanu and Kusum. Kangana ensures that both the characters are different and she does that with élan. Hats off to you lady!! You made sure that no one seated in the audience moved their eyes off from you. Her Hariyanvi accent (as Kusum) is great fun to listen to. Make sure you pay attention or else you will not be able to understand most of what is being said.

Madhavan plays the role of Manu well. He underplays the part and leaves his mark on the audience too. Deepak Sobriyal as Pappi is loud in many parts. But as a whole he entertains and has the best comic lines in the film. Rajesh Sharma as Kusum’s brother is good in his small role. Swara Bhaskar as Tanu’s friend does not have much scope in the film.

Tanu weds Manu Returns is a fun film that one can watch to beat the heat. For those who have actually dared to watch Bombay Velvet, I assure that you watch this film to forget the pains that were inflicted by the not so velvety film. It is not every day that you get to watch a married couple’s love story on the silver screen.
