Director Debaditya Bandyopadhyay’s upcoming Bengali film Naxaal opens on 21st May, 1971 with the escape of a few Naxalite youths. The most important among them is Anirban Sen. Samar, another Naxalite dies and Anirban and their leader Sankar Da go absconding. After nearly 42 years one fine morning a FAX arrives at the Kolkata Metro Railways Headquarters. It says that today Anirban will commit suicide under the last Metro. Who is Anirban? What are his demands? These pertinent questions start emerging as the news starts taking center stage in the city. This news shakes the entire city from the Kolkata Police Headquarters (Lalbazar) to the news channels, while Anirban rattles the administration with one FAX after the other.
On the other hand, Siddhartha Chowdhury, CEO of the number-one Bengali News Channel engages himself in using this incident to boost his channel’s TRP. Like other channels, he too goes all-out to search for this ex-Naxalite person. Siddhartha, himself an experienced journalist, feels that Anirban is the trump card of the day. What happens next? This is what the film will answer.
