Richa Chaddha and the stars of New Hindi Film Masaan in Kolkata
The promotions for the upcoming Bollywood film Masaan took place in Kolkata in the presence of director Neeraj Ghaywan, Richa Chadda, Sweta Tripathi and Vicky Kaushal. Masaan has garnered immense critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival this year and has even won the FIPRESCI Prize in the Un Certain Regard section and a ‘Promising Future’ prize (Prix de l’avenir) in the debut films category.
The film Masaan is a story which is set in Benaras. The film depicts the love between a girl from a higher caste with that of a lower caste boy. It also showcases the state of a daughter who is guilt ridden due to her sexual encounter, a young boy in search of his own family and a father’s losing his morality.
“When I was making the film, I wanted to bring out the social stigmas which are so evident in the small towns and cities of our country even today. This film depicts a slice of life of the small town people” said Neeraj Ghaywan. The director also added that films which had earlier been screened in Cannes were either on political issues or regarding a disability. “I wanted to break free from this cycle and hence I made the film depicting a slice of life”, added the director.
Richa Chadda plays the role of Devi in the film. “Neeraj had worked in Gangs of Wasseypur with me and I knew him from then. When I was approached for the role, I liked it and hence I thought of doing the film” said the actress.
Sweta Tripathi will be seen in the role of Shaalu Gupta in Masaan. Speaking about her character, she said “Shaalu is a typical small town girl who is a bundle of energy in the film. She exudes positive vibes in the film. I am grateful to Neeraj that I was even considered for the role. I do not have any family connections in the industry and to have a good role offered at the beginning of your career feels awesome”.
The music of the film is by Indian Ocean. Sanjay Mishra, Pankaj Tripathi, Nikhil Sahni, Satya Kam Anand will be seen in important roles in the film.
The film releases in India on the 24th of July.
