Udayan celebrated its 29th Anniversary through the special performance “PRAYAS 2015” at Science City Auditorium recently. It was a two day long celebration of dance featuring various performances by the students of Udayan of different age groups. Interestingly, the dance show was graced by the performances by approximate 1500 of students. The show also saw the premier of the new dance drama ‘Sabari’, from the epic, Ramayana, choreographed and directed by Mamata Shankar.
The show was graced by the august presence of Amala Shankar, Mamata Shankar, Chandrodoy Ghosh, Ratul Shankar, Debjani Chaliya (Eminent Manipuri Exponent, Sayad Imran Hasan (Popular Actor-Singer of Bangladesh), Pramita Mullik, Tanmoy Bose, Debashree Roy, Shrikanta Acharya, Jaya Seal Ghosh and 1500 students of Udayan.
Since its inception, MAMATA SHANKAR BALLET TROUPE has not only produced several noteworthy choreographic presentations over the past two decades but in the process, have also been able to carve a niche for themselves in the performing arts arena. The group had been registered as “MAMATA SHANKAR DANCE COMPANY” in 2006. It follows the style evolved by Uday Shankar, which has the inherent grammar of Classical Indian dance and yet is innovative, contemporary and not shackled with the moors of rigid classicism.
It started with a devotional song Prabhuji Daya Karo, the music of which was composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar. A different flavor was added with Tagore’s composition Aju Sakhi Muhu Muhu from Bhanusingher Padavali. It was very interesting to see little dancers performing on Salil Chowdhury’s hit song Aay Re Chhute Aay Pujor Gandho Esechhe. The performance witnessed traditional elements as Ganesh Vandana too. Lopamudra Mitra’s Hobu Chandra Raja and Salil Chowdhury’s Ekanore were also enjoyed by the audience.
