Yester Year Actresses Remembered in Musical Evening Titled Songstress; A Research Based musical Curated by Riddhi Bandopadhyay



Songs of actresses from the twentieth century was presented in front of a hall packed audience at Rabindra Sadan at an event titled Songstress. The research based musical by Riddhi Bandopadhyay was an initiative by ‘Riddhi A Step for Music’.

The twentieth century was the time when jumping into acting by middle class women was not taken in a good way by the then society. Many a time men had to dress up as ladies and perform the roles of the women. It was during this time that Noti Binodini, Angurbala, Indubala, Kanan Devi, Ranibala, Kankabati Devi came into the scene. Songstress was a tribute to such glorious ladies.


Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee’s birthday was also celebrated at the event. He turned eighty this year. A cake was cut to mark the special occasion.

This was followed by the release of an audio CD release titled Prem Esechhilo, which is a collection of songs from Tagore. The songs have been sung by Riddhi Bandopadhyay and Dipyendu Das while the narration has been done by Soumitra Chatterjee.


Speaking at the occasion, Riddhi Bandopadhyay said “I am an artist as well as a citizen of the country. Hence, I have some social responsibilities too. As a result I have taken out time to research about these ladies who have contributed so much to the music and was path breakers in that era”.


Miss Shefali was the special guest at the event. The special show saw performances of young individuals from the red light area Komalgandhar (Durbar). Since music is a means of leading them to light, hence the musical was named Aloy Phera. Soumitra Chatterjee, Satinath Mukhopadhyay, Madhumita Basu, Debalina Kumar, Riddhi Bandopadhyay, Avirup Sengupta performed at the event. The entire event was the brain child of Riddhi.

The audience was surely mesmerized by the entire act!!
