In the august presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Shovon Chatterjee, Nirendranath Chakroborty, Tridib Chatterjee, Ashok Barman, Bolivian author Magela Baudoin, Sudangshu De and others, the 40th International Kolkata Book Fair was inaugurated at an event held at Milan Mela.
Speaking at the occasion, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said “It is indeed great to have a physical book in your hands. It has an old world charm to it. E-books, Kindle may have invaded our lives but even the sight of a child with a book in his/her hand is a delight for most of us. Possessing a book is still a sign of great pride for many individuals”.
Bolivian author Magela Baudoin said “It is a great honor to come to Kolkata for the International Book Fair. Even before I came to Kolkata I was introduced to the works of Rabindranath Tagore and hence I was aware of the literary heritage of the city”.
Ten books written by the Chief Minister were also released at the occasion. Interestingly a book on Intolerance also featured amongst the ten books. The books have been published from Dey’s Publishing.
Seated in the audience was actress June Malia, Pandit Debojyoti Bose among other eminent guests.
Bolivia is the theme country while Vietnam is the Guest of Honor at this year’s book fair.
Students of Adamas International School performed songs like Alokeri jhorna dharai, Prano bhorie trisha horie in front of the assembled audience.
The book fair will continue till the 7th of February.
