Singer Janiva Roy who is known for her soulful Ghazal renditions will be paying tribute to the “King of Ghazals” Mehdi Hassan at a musical evening titled “Tribute to Mehdi Hassan”. The singer will be accompanied by other eminent musicians like Sohel Rana, Arup Banerjee and Majhar Ali at the event.
Mehdi Hassan was a Pakistani singer who with his baritone voice influenced many singers like Jagjit Singh, Sonu Nigam and others. He brought Ghazals to the international audience and became one of the most enigmatic characters in the history of Ghazals.
Speaking about the event, singer Janiva Roy said “Mehdi Hassan ji never came to India for performing Ghazals. So I thought of doing an event to pay tribute to this legendary Ghazal singer. There have been events where Ghulam Ali ji, Jagjit Singh ji have performed in Kolkata. But the audience in this city has been deprived of the songs of Mehdi Hassan. When I paid tribute to the ace musician after his death, I thought of doing this event in my city. This will enable the people to come to know of his contribution to this genre and also about his importance to Ghazal tradition”.
The event is going to take place on the 29th of February at Kalamandir.
