Interview: Actress Ambalika Sarkar on Her Debut Bollywood Film Jab Tum Kaho and Upcoming Bollywood Projects

She made her debut with the Bengali film and now we see her making her debut as an actress in the Bollywood film Jab Tum Kaho, which released this Friday. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the young actress. Excerpts from the conversation….

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- You made your acting debut with the Bengali film!! Now you are making your debut with this film in Bollywood.

Ambalika Sarkar- (surprised, laughs) Oh! My God…You remember that film. Yes I was so young and new in this field at that point of time. Not that I have become very experienced now. But at least I now know how to face the camera. I was also doing modeling in those days.

So how are you balancing modeling with acting now?

Ambalika Sarkar- I have left modeling completely. To tell you the truth, I do not get the time for modeling now. Films are taking all my time. I want to focus on films and hence I have decided to stay away from modeling now.

Your career seems to have taken off in a big way. What is keeping you so busy?

Ambalika Sarkar- I completed another Hindi film named Awesome Mausam directed by Yogesh Bharadwaj. The film is eyeing for release on the 18th of March and we will be starting the promotions soon. Hence, you see that time is less and I have lots to do.

Tell us how you bagged the role in Jab Tum Kaho and also about the character in the film.

Ambalika Sarkar- I took part in the Kolkata auditions and I got selected here. Then I went to Mumbai and shot for the film. I play the character of Khushi in the film who is a psychology teacher by profession. She is a happy go lucky girl just like her name. The director wanted a Bengali girl who will speak Hindi in the way we Bengalis speak and also will be lively. Thankfully I fulfilled all these criteria and I was selected. I also got to act in this film, despite this being my debut film.

How was the shooting experience?

Ambalika Sarkar- It was a wonderful experience. Vikram sir was very helpful. He loves the city of Kolkata very much and he can speak Bengali also quite well. I am lucky that I got to play a Bengali character in my debut film. Not all actors get this chance. Hence this made acting easy for me. The only hitch that I felt was I had to play the role of the psychology teacher and also the depression surrounding the marital life of her parents. This was challenging to me. Hope I have been able to do justice to the role.

You have done a Bengali film before. So when do we see you again in Bengali films? Have you received any offers?

Ambalika Sarkar- Yes, I did receive some offers but they did not work out due to one reason or the other. However, I am always ready to work in a Bengali film if the story is good and I get a good director to guide me in that film.

Wishing the Bengali Babe Ambalika Sarkar all the best for her Bollywood debut!! We hope she makes Kolkata proud in Bollywood!!
