In the august presence of eminent personalities like Pramita Mallick, Chitra Sen, Debesh Chattopadhaya, Sohag Sen, Sidhu(Cactus), Kohinoor Sen Barat, Sudarshan Chakravorty, Bharati Ray and Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee, Jatra impersonators Janardhan Rani and Chapal Bhaduri was felicitated. This was part of the event titled Future Footprints Obhijatra. Conceptualized by Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee, the event was presented by Future Media School.

Janardhan Nandi, also popularly known as Janardhn Rani is the only surviving impersonator other than Chapal Rani. He started performing at the tender age of five in association with Charan Kabi Mukunda Das. The association was shortlived as he had to come to Kolkata when his family migrated. He joined Chitpur Jatrrra and his performances as Chandraboti and Lutfa won him wide acclaim. “My career’s best performance is in the role of Kali in the play Ramprasad” said the legendary artist.

Chapal Bhaduri also famous as Chapal Rani hails from a family of actors and was closely related to Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. He first performed at seven years in the play Bindur Chele. Fans remember him for stellar performances in Chand Bibi, Sultana Razi, Yajaseni and others.

Debojit Bandopadhyay threw light on the Bengali Jatra and Marathi Tamasha scenario and development over the years. “Many artists who had been playing the role of women in Jatras were actually young boys whose boys sounded like that of women. Even during the songs, they were given the high pitched songs so that the voice texture matched to that of the fairer sex” said Debojit Bandopadhyay.

Speaking at the event, Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee said “Getting support for projects of this kind is a huge problem. Not many people will come forward to support such projects which according to many are devoid of the charisma of the actors and actresses of films. Hence Future Media School deserves appreciation for coming forward and supporting such a unique project”.

The event ended by the screening of the film “Chena Kintu Ajana” which focused on the last generation of female impersonators of Jatra. The film showcases and gives the viewers a peek into the lives of these performers. The film has been directed by Dipankar Dutta. The concept and research is by Debojit Majumder and Moloy Kundu. The singers who took part in this film include Janardhan Nandi, Dr. Sarbananda Chaudhuri and Babulal Ganguly. Chapel Bhaduri and Janardhan Nandi have performed in the film.

Future Footprints Obhijtara is surely a noble way of reconstructing the heritage of Bengal which many of us are not even aware of!!
