Actor Riddhi Sen set the balls rolling for the discussion by performing monologues from Macbeth, Coriolanus at the event. His soulful and mind blowing performances of the soliloquies kept the audience awestruck.

Actor-director Kaushik Sen who has been part of two films based on Shakespeare’s plays namely Arshinagar (adapted from Romeo and Juliet) and Zulfikar (Julius Caesar) highlighted on the fact that Bengal and Shakespeare had a great connection. “Girish Ghosh while training the actresses namely Noti Binodini used to give references to the acting done by the Western actors in such plays. This is also evident in the writings of Noti Binodini too. Sarah Bernard acted in a different way when compared to the acting of Sarah Siddens” said Kaushik Sen. The actor-director also highlighted that the works done on Shakespeare’s plays had started long back and the present day makers need not be much happy that they are doing something pioneering by working on the Bard.

Music composer Debojyoti Mishra who had composed music for the play King Lear and the film Arshinagar said “I was introduced to Shakespeare in school. Later when I got married, my first wife’s mother used to teach English at a college. Hence to impress my wife, I brushed up my knowledge about the Bard. Jokes apart, it was during the making of the play King Lear that I watched many adaptations of the same play. That helped me to understand how different makers interpreted his writings. We did it in our way”.

The animated discussion highlighted on one single aspect and that is Shakespeare still lives on due to the fact that the writer understood the frailties and complexities of human minds like no one else!!
