Barcelos, the South-African Based Casual Dining Restaurant Chain opens its First Outlet in Kolkata

International casual dining restaurant chain Barcelos made their presence felt in Eastern India by opening their first 100 seater outlet at Kolkata. Mr. Rohit Malhotra, India Business Head of Barcelos, Mr. Robin Sarkar, Mr. Kaushik Roy Chowdhury and Mr. Indranil Roy Chowdhury, Directors of Trivia Food and Beverages were present at the occasion to share the brand specifics and expansion plans.


After the successful launches in New Delhi and Gurgaon, the brand seems very hopeful with the Kolkata outlet. Barcelos introduced Black and Red Burger and this has been breaking the myth of unhealthiness associated with burgers. The Black Burger is made out of spinach extract, cocoa powder and hence it is very healthy. The Red Burger has ingredients like beet root, tomato which gives it the red color. There is also a White Burger which is snow white in color.


The brand started with its single operation in Pretoria, South Africa in 1993. The company boasts of its presence in 18 countries including UK, Sweden and Middle East with operations in more than 120 outlets across the world.

Barcelos serves authentic Afro-Portugese cuisine. Their USPs is their four unique variations of Peri Peri Sauce: Mild, Tangy, Veri and Supa. The other innovations of the brand are Flamed Grilled Chicken varieties, healthiest burgers, Portugese dishes, innovative salads and molecular drinks.


The decor theme is predominantly “Southern European”. A lot of wood, iron and bricks have been used to get the Portuguese retro touch.  To break the monotony and further add life and freshness to the interiors a lot of pastel colours like red and yellow has been used.  One of the walls adore a huge canvas hand painting covering almost 500 sq ft of area to blend in a Portuguese street market feel. The walls at the restaurant offer a glimpse of the legends of Barcelos, which is a city in Potrugal, and shows the journey of the restaurant chain. There is also a fresco seating arrangement just outside the restaurant.

The average price per customer is Rs. 1,000 plus taxes for two and the restaurant is open from 11 am to 11 pm.
