Debut director Aditya Roy Banerjee who has a background in civil engineering was bit by the film making bug some years ago. The young man is busy with the promotions of his upcoming Bengali feature film It’s Basanto slated for release this Friday. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondet caught up with the director to talk about his films, his expectations and future plans. Read on..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- You have a degree in civil engineering. When did develop the inclination towards film making?

Aditya Roy Banerjee- Well, my father used to act in Jatras. I have not taken part in any Jatra but that had an influence on my mind nevertheless. So I completed my degree in civil engineering, got a job in LMT and was going on with my life. Then after some time, I realized I wanted to make films. I left my job and made a film under the banner of Rose Valley. But that did not release. So It’s Basanto is my first film and I am very excited about it.

Now that you have become a director, is it adieu for your job as a civil engineer?

Aditya Roy Banerjee- Not at all! I have my own firm now in Mumbai. I am still very much a civil engineer as much as I am a director.

Quite a handful!! So how do you handle both the jobs?

Aditya Roy Banerjee- Well, I have a staff and they do the projects under my supervision. Though it takes a lot of effort to balance both ends, I am trying to achieve that in my own way. I get stressed at times too.

So tell us something about the story of the film.

Aditya Roy Banerjee- Two stories have been shown in the film. The first story is about an aged couple who meet after a long time. They were in love once and now they have again met each other after such a long time. Though the society and their family think their love at such an age to be weird, they go against the conventions for their love. The role of the aged couple has been played by Paran Bandopadhyay and Lili Chakraborty.  Mainak and Ritabhari play the young self of this aged couple.

The second story shows how much dependant we have become on mobile phones. The love story of Badhan and Piyal is shown in this story. How they meet via the mobile phone and what happens to their love story is what is shown. I and Priyanka Sarkar have acted as the lead in this story.

So, do you think that we have become too much dependent on the digital devices like mobile phones for instance?

Aditya Roy Banerjee- It is extremely true that we have become extremely dependent on the mobile phones. Earlier we used to write down numbers in phone books and even used to remember numbers. But now we just save the numbers in our mobile sets. Once the phone gets lost, the numbers are also lost.

You have veteran actors in your debut film. How was the experience of directing them?

Aditya Roy Banerjee- The experience has been great. I have worked with veterans like Paran bandopadhyay, Lili Chakraborty, Supriyo and yet they have always helped and guided me. They have never treated me as if I am a new director or bossed over me. I have developed a father-son relation with Paran Bandopadhyay. Ritabhari and Mainak have also been very helpful during the shoots.

You have directed as well as acted in the film. How did you handle both the responsibilities?

Aditya Roy Banerjee- A film is a team work and I have got full support from my team. Hence despite handling two responsibilities, I could complete both of them well. I am grateful to the team for being such a sport.

As a debut director, you must have certain expectations from the film. What are the expectations that you harbor?

Aditya Roy Banerjee- I want the audience to like my film. People will remember their love after watching the film It’s Basanto. I sincerely hope people appreciate the effort and the love we have put in making the film.

After It’s Basanto, what is next in line for you?

Aditya Roy Banerjee- I will begin the shooting of my next film from August. However I do not want to reveal the name at this point.

We wish the new director all the best and wishing that It’s Basanto is a box office success!!
