Tagore’s Raktakarabi Performed; An Amalgamation of Different Performing Arts

Rabindranath Tagore’s Raktakarabi was staged recently at P. C. Chandra Garden. The event was inaugurated in the presence of eminent theatre personality Bivash Chakraborty.

Bratati Parampara performed Raktakarabi. The performance was presented in an audio-visual format with music and choreography to enhance the experience of the audience. This is the first ever initiative by an artist to stage this play by amalgamating different forms of performing arts.

Bratati Bandopadhyay as Nandini, Debesh Roy Chowdhury as Raja, Srikanta Acharya as Bishu, Manoj Murali Nair as Phagulal and other eminent elocutionists performed different roles. Madhubani Chatterjee was the choreographer and principal dancer of this piece.

Raktakarabi is a symbolic play by Tagore. It shows the conflict between man and machines, liberty and tyranny. This play was staged only once during Tagore’s lifetime. Few groups have attempted to stage this play later on. The first successful performance of this play was by Bahuroopee and it was directed by Sambhu Mitra. Till date this is the most successful performance of this play.

Bratati Parampara’s enactment however kept the audience mesmerized!!
