In aid of the retired teachers of The Lady Brabourne College who need financial assistance to meet their medical expenses, Tagore’s dance drama Shyama was performed at Kalamandir recently.

Rabindanath Tagore’s dance drama Shyama was performed at the event. Rituparna Sengupta as Shyama, Koushik Sen as Bajrasen, Kajal Hazra, Debrup Ray and Prabir Dey performed in various roles in the play. The narration is by Sreela Majumder. Live singing was performed by Indrani Sen, Manoj Murli Nair, Biswajit Dasgupta, Tathagata Sengupta and others.

Shyama can be best described as a mix of opera and ballet. This was Tagore’s last work for the stage. The play reflects the philosophies and artistic reaction of Tagore to turbulences in pre-Independence India and the persecution of Jews in Germany.
