Tollywood Actress Subhasree at Joyjeet Das Memorial School to Celebrate International Literacy Day

Tollywood actress Subhasree Ganguly, along with Mr Avinash Agarwalla, Director, BMA Steel Ltd the makers of Captain TMT Bar donated Rs 1 lakh for the welfare of the students of the NGO run institute Joyjeet Das Memorial School to mark the 50th year of International Literacy Day.

In November, 1965, UNESCO declared September 8 to be celebrated as International Literacy Day. Since this proclamation, schools, communities and organizations have united around the world on this day to raise awareness and enable increased accessibility to education in developing nations. The aim is to highlight the importance of  literacy to individuals, communities and societies.

“It is indeed heartening to see the people behind Joyjeet Das Memorial School working so hard to provide education to the needy children. I was touched by their initiative and decided to contribute towards the welfare of the children of this institute”, said Subhasree Ganguly, who dedicates quality time in various social initiatives.

Ms Shimanti Das founded Joyjeet Das Memorial School in the loving memory of her soon Joyjeet, who at the age of 13, succumbed to cancer. Shimanti’s world plunged into darkness after the tragedy in 2002 but the memory of her son inspired her to move ahead and stand beside helpless and underprivileged children. Joyjeet had wanted her to look after poor children and that is what she vowed to work towards. With the help from a few others, Shimanti set aside her struggle for survival and chose to serve poor children in the city. She also started working for women’s empowerment and founded four schools in different parts of Kolkata. Joyjeet Das Memorial School was born on Joyjeet’s first death anniversary in 2003.

Shimanti also formed a trust called Schools of the World with the belief that every child deserves a chance. Today her project runs a kitchen for schoolchildren, a day care centre, a vocational training centre for the mothers and the first recreation club for underprivileged women.

Initiatives of this kind are therefore much helpful in imparting education!!
