Jyotirindra Moitra (1911-1977), poet-composer-singer, was one of the leading figures in the world of Bengali culture. A contemporary of stalwarts like Bishnu De and Buddhadeva Basu, Jyotirindra curved a niche for himself with his signature poem Madhubanshir Gali and operatic creation Nabajiboner Gaan.
For the last few years the Jyotirinda Moitra Memorial Lecture (JMML) is being held to commemorate his birthday in the month of November. This lecture series began in 2012, at the closing ceremony of the poet-composer’s birth centenary. Scholars from various fields have delivered this prestigious lecture and elevated its importance.
The fifth JMML was delivered by veteran film actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay. Prof. Pabitra Sarkar was in conversation with him.
After this a video-montage based on Jyotirindra Moitra’s works was premiered. Stalwarts like Kabir Suman, Pratul Mukhopadhyay, Srikanto Acharya, Debashish Raychaudhuri, Badsha Maitra, Bidipta Chakraborty, Saheb Chattopadhyay, Rohini Raychaudhuri, Jolly Bagchi along with a host of present generation performers have taken part in this montage.
Entitled Nobojiboner Bhasha, this video-montage has been conceptualized and created by Debashish Raychaudhuri. Camera work is by Arjun and Arnab Mukherjee. Edited by Saikat Shekhareshwar Ray, this unique effort to familiarize the young generation with the works of Jyotirindra Moitra is partly funded by admirers of ‘Batukda’ (as Moitra was popularly known) all over the world.
