Aparna Sen’s latest directorial venture Sonata which will be releasing in mid April is the psychological exploration of three unmarried women who faces mid-life crisis. The trailer of the film was launched recently in the presence of Aparna Sen, Kalyan Roy, Barun Chanda and others.

Aruna Chaturvedi (Aparna Sen) is a professor, Dolon Sen (Shabana Azmi) is a banker while Subhadra Parekh (Lillete Dubey) is a journalist. Dolon and Aruna live together while Subhadra lives with her boyfriend who is abusive. The film showcases the friendship of these women who though different in their temperament are bound by ties of friendship.

The film is based on a play by Mahesh Elkunchwar. A maid and a transgender woman’s character have been added in the film which was not present in the play.

“We see mostly films on male friendship, but not on female friendships. This will be something new for the audience who will hopefully love the film” said the Aparna Sen. When asked why she selected Shabana Azmi to play Dolon she said “It is simply because Shabana sings so well”.

Kalyan Roy will be playing Avinash in the film. “I play Aruna’s love interest in the film. This is a small role but a meaningful one” said Kalyan Roy.

The 103 minutes film has music by Neel Dutt.
