Thalassemia Awareness Campaign Organized by Rotary Club of Calcutta Presidency; Aim to Make People Aware of the Disease

West Bengal has one of the highest percentages of Thalassemia cases in India and the numbers are increasing rapidly. This is happening mainly through new births because of lack of awareness in the local population about this dreaded disorder.

An event was organised at the lawns of Moharkunj by Rotary Club of Calcutta Presidency, assisted by Nilratan Sircar Medical College, to create awareness in the general masses about the disease. The ceremonial lamp was lit by Sri Debasish Kumar-MIC of Kolkata Corporation, Sri BD Sharma-Advisor (IPS) Advisor to WB Government on correctional Homes, Sri Jagmohan-(IPS),DG of WB Fire Services and other dignitaries including Dr. Prantar Chakrabarty (HOD of NRS), Dr. Rina Malpani (Gynaecologist) and Sangita Jain-President of Rotary Presidency.

Songs, Dances, Skits, debates were organized by the children and the youth from various institutions. A play was put up by Thalassemia patients to show to the world that despite the health issues they were undaunted.

Arrangements we also made for free testing of Thalassemia at the NRS Medical College and interested persons were handed over Free Test Cards at the vent site.
