Video: Interview of Actor Tota Roy Chowdhury
Tollywood actor Tota Roy Chowdhury will be seen in an important role in the upcoming Bollywood film Indu Sarkar, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. Sholoana Bangaliana caught up with the actor in an exclusive chat. Excerpts..
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Can you throw some light on the role that you have played in this film?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- I play Navin Sarkar in the film. He is NRI Bengali who stays in Delhi. He gets a government job and then he meets an orphan girl who is also a poet Indu. They like each other and they get married. In the meantime, emergency is declared. What happens to the relation of the couple in such a situation is what is shown in the film. The film revolves around Indu and we are the people in her life.
How did you bag the role of Navin Sarkar?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- This is sheer luck, I will have to say!! I got a phone call and I thought that I will have to go and audition for the role. But I was surprised when they called me to offer this role directly to me. What can I say? I am just lucky.
You are working in many Bollywood films one after the other. Do you think that the directors in Bollywood have been able to understand your worth as an actor more than the directors in Tollywood?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- The amount of respect that I have been getting from Bollywood is quite good. I never expected that to happen. And yes, I have been getting meatier roles in Bollywood films more than what I have got in the Bengali films.
Do you have any regret about not getting good work in Tollywood?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- There is regret because it is Bengal that I have begun my career and I have learnt acting. This is my home. I am a Bengali. Hence it feels sad often when I do not get strong roles here. But on the other hand, I am being offered good roles from outside this industry. The situation is like as if my family members do not liking me while the outsiders are appreciating my work.
How was the experience of working with Madhur Bhandarkar?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- It was an enriching experience. We used to have great fun on the sets, we used to discuss about many things and yet Madhur sir never allowed us to leave the character. He was like the guard man who used to keep us all on the track.
Since the film revolves around Indu, how was the experience of working with Kirti Kulhari who plays Indu in the film?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- She is an amazing actress. Despite working in many good films and being such a good performer, she has no tantrums. She is an actress with whom I shared a great comfort level. I like rehearsing my lines quite a few times. And she was so sporty about that fact which is great. She is someone who is very focussed and professional.
After the trailer launch, many controversies have surfaced around the film. What is your take on it?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- The situation is like- I decide about the book by seeing the cover of the book. But that must not be the case. One must watch the film to understand what the film shows. I will tell you something. There is nothing controversial about the film. After watching a three minute trailer, everyone is stating their opinion. Let the film release!! Watch it and then comment.
What is your expectation from Indu Sarkar?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- The film is about a speech defect woman who lived during the emergency period. How she overcame her difficulty and became a strong individual is what the film showcases. A difficult story has been told in a simple way. I feel that the film will be loved by the cine-lovers.
Wishing the actor all the best for Indu Sarkar and we hope that the actor continues to amaze us with his amazing acting skills in the future too!!
