Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the talented actor and DJ Shilpi Sharma. Excerpts..
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- How did you actually become interested in becoming a DJ?
DJ Shilpi Sharma- I actually never imagined that I will be a DJ. I loved listening to music and I was doing films at that time. In the meantime my father died and I could not focus much on work. I turned to music during that time. I had many music producer and DJ friends. So I started learning the art of DJ and I actually liked it. I took about a month’s training. I did my first show in Hyderabad which became a huge hit. And since then there has been no looking back.
How has been the journey from being an actress to a DJ?
DJ Shilpi Sharma- The journey has been immensely interesting. There have been both highs and lows. However there have been lots of challenges. The outcome has been beautiful but I have not achieved it so easily. The most challenge I had to face was that I was a pretty face who was an actress. Then why was I entering into this area?
You are more inclined toward making singles. What is the reason behind this?
DJ Shilpi Sharma- Singles is my baby. This is like making a song for your own self. Singles are in and hence I am doing music in this genre.
So where do we get to see more of you in future- in films and in music?
DJ Shilpi Sharma- I will definitely go on pursuing music. However if I get a good offer and a great role, I will do films.
Do you any dream director that you will like to work with? Any dream role???
DJ Shilpi Sharma- Luckily, my dream director is Madhur Bhandarkar and I have worked with him before. A role that I really liked is Deepika Padukone’s role in Bajirao Mastani. Those are the kind of roles that really attract me.
So will we get to see you doing remix in regional languages?
DJ Shilpi Sharma- Yes definitely. I am interested in doing remixes in regional languages and reaching out to a wider audience base.
What are the challenges that you have faced as a female DJ?
DJ Shilpi Sharma- I have been lucky but I have faced some challenges too. The most important challenge was that people just took me to be a pretty face and doubted whether I will be able to play. I had to prove them wrong. Next, many female DJ’s who had been working in this area for some years was initially having trouble because I got fame the moment I entered this area. They thought this was because of my looks. But they forgot that I had to put in extra effort to make people take notice of my music and not my pretty face.
What is your advice to young female DJ’s?
DJ Shilpi Sharma- One must be focused and one must never compare their work with that of the boys. If one is sure about pursuing a career in this field, then they must carry on with it. One must dress properly. The dress should not get the attention but the music must. Be dignified. Stay happy and enjoy life.
We wish DJ Shilpi Sharma all the best for her future works and hope she continues to enthral us with her good music.
