Video: Interview of Musician Abhishek Basu
Musician Abhishek Basu who is well known for experimenting with various kinds of music has taken up the challenging job of creating theme music for some Puja committees in Kolkata. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the musician at Royal Bengal Tiger Cafe. Excerpts..
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Which pujos are you associated with?
Abhishek Basu- I am associated with Samaj Sebi, Jagat Mukherjee Park, Ajeyo Sanhati and Bhawanipore 75 Palli. I will be doing the theme music and theme song of Bhawanipore 75 Palli. I have done Western Classical based music for them. But no one will feel that this has been done just like that. Samaj Sebi which usually sticks to traditional themes will be surprising everyone with the theme that they have selected.
What kind of briefing did you get from the Puja committees?
Abhishek Basu- Different pujas have different themes. And hence I have tried to make the music as different as possible. I have broken the style of theme music that was going on for the past few years. When you will enter Samaj Sebi, there will be four kinds of music at the four stages of the pandal.
For 75 Palli, I have used folk music for the theme song. But for the theme music, Western Classical music has been used by me.
In Jagat Mukherjee Park, I have used santoor to create a soothing water related sound.
For Ajeyo Sanhati, sitar and piano have been used together to create a fusion music.
You will be very busy this year during the Pujas..
Abhishek Basu- I am busy every year, but this year the hectic schedule has begun two-three months beforehand. Khuti-pujo, planning for the music- all have kept me busy beforehand. I also have a puja in my home too. Musicians have a tough schedule during the pujas with musical tours abroad. I have plans also of going abroad. Let’s see. If not, I will go to the pandals where I have composed music and interact with the people to see whether they liked it or not. That will help me a lot.
What are your expectations from the music that you have created?
Abhishek Basu- I will not say that people will hate my music and neither will I say that people will love my music. I have tried to break the rules of composing theme music and I am keeping fingers crossed. Hope people will enjoy the music during the Pujas.
We too hope that Abhishek Basu’s music is appreciated by the audience during the Pujas.
Best of Luck!!
